It was almost 11.30 a.m. when Woods walked back into the Incident Room. Jacobs came across and whispered, “I bet you didn’t see that coming.”

“You’re right, talk about a turning point. Come into my office.”

Jacobs conformed and squatted on one of the stools while he was updated. “Wow,” he said.

Woods leaned back, slightly swivelling his chair from side to side, the satisfaction of the cat that had stolen the cream clearly visible. “The statements, plus the film, which I can now claim was pushed through my letterbox, prove beyond doubt that Maria didn’t kill Guilford-Johnston.”

“They also prove that our friends are complicit in murder and guilty of perverting the course of justice.”

Woods exhaled audibly, to the point where it nearly became a whistle. “We have to keep this to ourselves for the moment. Maria’s safety is paramount. If Williams discovers that she’s no longer a suspect, she’ll be in danger.”

Jacobs acknowledged the point with a quick nod. “I’ve got the pathologist’s finalised report. Granger just e-mailed me. Just like the interim one, it states that Guilford-Johnston was killed by a single bullet through the temple, fired from the same gun that was used in his abduction, the one that shot the protection officers.”

“Can I have a copy? Yet more evidence of their criminal intent.”

“I’ll print one off for you.”

“I’m meeting Maria after lunch. I’d better go and update Foster.”
