Chapter Eleven

In Too Deep

The next morning Zane surfaced in my apartment. Throughout that slow period of waking, I smelled wheat and butter pancakes, fresh coffee, and sausages sizzling in a frying pan. He walked around the apartment in a pair of cotton briefs. I climbed out of bed and stretched, walked to the tiny breakfast nook/kitchen area that overlooked the back alley, and heard him say, “I hope you don’t mind, I broke in this morning and decided to use your washer. Mine is on the fritz.” He passed me a mug of steamy coffee and kissed my left cheek, which I enjoyed. Slowly he pulled away from me and said, “Damn, you are so hot in the morning. I particularly like the mussed-hair look and dawn stubble.”

“You’re not so bad either.”

Another kiss, this time on my neck. The sausages needed turning and he left my side to rescue them. At the stove, in his briefs, he held a spatula and said, “I took care of the media for you. You’re out of their scope for the time being. I sent them on a hunt for a pedophile named Marvin C. Tuft, who will keep them busy for a little while.”

“Thank you,” I said. I sipped my coffee. “You’re a dream boy.”

The sausages were done, as well as the pancakes. I sat down at the two-person table set with Ikea plates and flatware, butter, maple syrup, and strawberry preserves. He served me two pancakes and three sausages. “You need a power breakfast today. We have lots of work to do. I want to pay Coach Bassett a visit, and two of Cort’s friends.”

“I can’t go with you today. I need to work at the salon this morning. Besides, my mother expects me for lunch.” I took another sip of coffee and peered across the table.

“How about I talk to Coach Bassett this morning and you work in the salon? Afterward, we hook up at your mother’s for lunch.”

I shook my head. “You are not visiting Mother. She knows you tried to kill me three times and she’ll go ballistic if you step a foot in her house.”

“Accidents happen. I’m sure she can understand that.” He shared a look with me that said I’m trying here, stop being a queen.

I rolled my eyes. “Mother understands nothing. She’s a viper…and very protective of her two boys. Lunch is not a possibility.”

“I’ll charm and woo her with my detective skills.”

“She’ll eat you up and spit you out. Mother has no genial side.” I slipped a forkful of pancake lathered with butter and syrup into my mouth.

“That’s too bad, I was hoping to meet her.”

“Never,” I said with my mouth full, enjoying the pancakes.

Zane stood, walked over to my side, and said, “You have syrup on your bottom lip. Let me get that.” He licked my bottom lip in a frisky and sexy manner, then kissed me, pulled off and backed away from my lips, and said, “I wore this outfit just for you this morning, Troy.
