Chapter 5

Kane

I pull up on my bike outside Roxy’s apartment just as the sun rises, a bag of her favorite donuts in hand. I don’t care what it takes, I’ll use every bit of knowledge from our years of friendship. I’ll beg, borrow, and steal. Hell, I’d even kill if that wouldn’t just prove her right. As I climb off my bike, I adjust my cut. It’s the first time I’ve worn it to her place, and I’m sure I’ll get some pushback for it. But it doesn’t matter.

Because I am Not. Letting. Her. Go.

With conviction in every fiber of my being, I knock on her door. When she opens it, looking a little rough in an oversized shirt and sleep shorts. I want to sweep her into my arms and make all the bad things disappear. Unfortunately, this time I’m the one who hurt her, so it’s up to me to fix it.

“You need to come with me,” I tell her.

“Kane, this isn’t really the time.”

“It’s the only time. Fifteen years of friendship say so.”

“Fifteen years of friendship mean you shouldn’t have lied to me.” Her eyes spark with anger. Good. I’ll take the fire over the sadness any day.

“You’re right,” I state quietly.

“I— What?” she stutters.

“I said you’re right. But I’m still not giving you up. And I need to show you something.”

She sighs and rolls her eyes. “Fine. Come in while I get dressed.”

“Wear jeans and boots.”

“Bossy, son of a…” I hear her mumble as she closes the door to her bedroom. I glare at the door. This is the last time I’ll be forced to be on the other side.

She comes out a minute later and sticks her hand in the bag on the counter. “At least you brought my favorite,” she mutters, shoving a bear claw in her mouth.

“Let’s go.”

Once we’re outside, she climbs on the bike behind me. Like she was made to be there. I pull out on the street and head in the direction of the Raging Angels’ compound.

“Where are we going? You know the pub opens tomorrow. I can’t be gone very long,” she calls out over the sound of the motor.

“Don’t worry. You’ll have time.”

That seems to reassure her. At least I still have that much of her trust. And after today, I hope to have even more.

I park in front of the compound, where most of the members of the club are already on their bikes.

“What’s this?” Roxy asks me. “Is this the club cult thing?”

“This is a biker poker ride.”

“And what is a biker poker ride?” she asks, her tone full of snark.

“It’s where you get to see what I like about being in an MC. And how they aren’t all bad.”

Just as I finish speaking, Ranger, the MC President, revs his engine. “Let’s go, everyone!” Willow, his old lady, calls from her seat behind him.

All the club members roll onto the street, and Roxy and I quickly join them.

We ride for twenty minutes, and like every time I ride with my brothers, I feel the addictive sense of freedom and belonging.
