Chapter 5

When I blink awake the next morning, I find myself face-to-face with a sleeping Reaper. For once, he’s not frowning. He looks softer in sleep, and I linger, barely resisting the urge to reach up and stroke his face. But I know how much that would piss him off, so I keep my hands to myself.

Instead, I slip quietly out of bed. Back in the living room, Tom is sleeping on the back of the couch but blinks lazily at me, watching me cross into the kitchen area. I find my computer right where I left it last night on the table, and I open it, curious to see if Professor Meter received my email.

She did, and there’s a reply waiting for me: Cora, this is great but I’m worried about the depth of your involvement. Come see me today after class so we can talk.

Worried about my involvement? I scoff and close the computer again, rubbing a thumb over the angel wings on my wrist. Maybe she does have something to worry about, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Am I fully objective? Probably not. But I’m learning things about MC life, culture, and people that I’d never find out otherwise.

And I’m learning about myself as well; about how lonely I’ve been. About how nice it feels to be seen and wanted. If that’s affecting my observations, so be it.

Deciding to put it to the side for now, I go in search of the bathroom, finding it in the narrow hall just outside of the bedroom. Peeking into the bedroom, I see Reaper still sleeping, sprawled on top of the covers. I slip into the bathroom, strip out of my clothes, and hop into his shower. I take a minute to smell all of his soaps. Between the steamy water beating down on me and the way his scent surrounds me, it’s tempting to touch myself, but I hold back, hopeful that he’ll take care of it for me.

I don’t have to wait long. The shower curtain whips back and I give a surprised yelp as I turn and see Reaper standing in front of me, stark naked.

And holy shit, the man is the most perfect specimen I’ve ever seen in real life, even without my glasses on. My eyes are drawn down his body, savoring his sculpted muscles and tanned skin, and down even further, to the V’s of his hips and then… I pause, my mouth suddenly dry as I take in the sight of his erection, long and thick and hard. It makes me ache somewhere deep inside.

“Move over,” he says, and I move to the side as he steps beneath the spray. I watch hungrily as he dips his head back, water flowing over his hair and face and shoulders, making his skin glisten.

“What are you doing?” I manage to stammer.

“Conserving water,” he answers, squirting soap into one of his palms and lathering it up between his hands.

“So, MC’s are very environmentally conscious, then?” I joke, trying to lighten the mood.
