Thirty-Three

Des

I stormed off stage as the commercials rolled, ignoring Vanessa and Winnie giggling together. They were clearly getting some sort of sick satisfaction about catching me off guard and making me out to be a sexual deviant bent on destroying Jude.

But when I reached Samantha to question her, Diego was already laying into her.

“What the hell was that?” he demanded. “There’s no reason Des should have gone out there if they were just going to gang up on her like some kind of witch-hunt.”

“I agree,” Samantha said, her eyes troubled. “Natalie set it up, and this is never the kind of position we want to put our clients in. We always want to be more prepared than this.”

From behind us, a cameraman called, “Ninety seconds to air.”

“Let’s go,” I said. “We don’t need to hang around for this.”

Samantha quickly shook her head. “No, if you leave now, it’ll just add fuel to their fire, make them think they’re right.”

“So, what?” I asked. “I’m supposed to sit around and let them cut me off and position me as Jude Santiago’s downfall on national television?”

Samantha squared her shoulders, facing me. “Desirae De Leon. You are done playing small. You’re going to get up there and do what you do best. You’re going to put Winnie and that groupie in their place, just like you did with Natalie this morning.”

“Thirty seconds!” the cameraman called.

Samantha turned my shoulders so I was facing the stage and said, “You can do this.”

I glanced at Diego, and he nodded, then patted my arm.

They were right. I could do this. I marched back to the set where Winnie and Vanessa were yakking with each other like a pair of hyenas.

I gave them a smile just as big and fake as Winnie’s and sat in my chair. I didn’t cross my legs or fold my arms or touch my neck. No, I squared my shoulders and sat up and took up space, exactly like I deserved to do.

The cameraman counted down, and the crowd cheered. “Welcome back! We were just talking to Desirae about her past and our precious Jude’s heart.”

“Exactly,” I said, standing up. I wasn’t going to be cut off this time. “And I was about to say how thankful I am Winnie called me on her show today. It’s not every day someone gets to talk about sex positivity. I want every girl in this audience, every girl watching in their living room, to know exactly how precious you are. How powerful you are. However you choose to express yourself is no one’s choice but your own. But how you choose to treat other women is.”

I gave Winnie and Vanessa a pointed look. The crowd began clapping, and Winnie tried to cut in, but I continued. “And because we women lift each other up, Winnie, Vanessa, and I are teaming up in the name of body positivity and female empowerment and gifting every member of the studio audience a ticket to Jude Santiago’s show, in Philadelphia, tonight!”

The crowd grew even louder, and I grinned ear-to-ear.
