A week later, with the necessary part for my car still on backorder, I’d begun making more use of the university shuttle system, which surprisingly, stopped at a ton of places around town

And that’s where I was sitting, waiting for a shuttle to return me to my apartment complex, which was literally right across from campus, after a graduate internship interview at the nearby convention center, when I met Harold Hayes. Or re-met him, rather.

We’d both been in a social media class in our third year of undergrad, and we’d even been partnered together on a project. But we’d never talked beyond that.

As we sat and chatted at the shuttle stop, I discovered he’d since graduated like I had, though one year before me, and had gone on to spend the last year working at an accounting firm before returning to Auburn this fall to get his master’s degree in mathematics.

Since he’d only been walking past the stop to get to the parking structure, he offered me a ride back to my apartment, and we ended up grabbing a quick bite along the way.

Knowing that I was getting my master’s in communication, he suggested we go to a special screening of The Social Network the following night.

It had happened so effortlessly that it didn’t occur to me until after I’d said yes that I had landed smack in the middle of one of those things some people referred to as a date.

Me, getting asked out on an actual date a week after my discussion with Aiden on this very topic. What were the odds?

I hadn’t gone out looking for a date. And I still wasn’t really certain I wanted to even go on one. But I said yes to Harold asking me out.

Not because I was working toward some undefined quota of life experience with the opposite sex that would satisfy the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

But because Harold was a nice guy, and we were just going out as friends. Despite what Aiden thought about my lack of experience, I knew my mind and heart enough to know that hanging out with another guy wasn’t going to change my feelings for Aiden one iota.

So the date? Not a big deal at all for me in the grand scheme of things.

When Friday rolled around, everything unfolded pretty much as expected.

He really was a nice guy, and I could already see we were going to become good buddies.

But nothing more.

Honestly, even if I weren’t madly in love with Aiden, I highly doubted my feelings toward Harold would be any different. Throughout the night, he’d leaned over and whispered close to my ear a few times. Each time, I’d felt zilch. Not even a tingle over the nearness. And when he’d touch my shoulder or arm to get my attention, I didn’t feel that spark, didn’t hold my breath and marvel over the inexplicable chemistry. Nothing.

So far, dating was proving to be highly overrated.

Still, it’d been a fun night.
