The ceremony was small but tastefully elegant. Claire’s parents and siblings were in attendance, a little baffled by having just learned of Claire’s new man through the engagement announcement. Her father was put somewhat at ease when he realized that Claire was marrying someone at the top of the Forbes list, especially considering her student loans (which Parker had paid off entirely as an engagement gift). Savannah stood beside Claire as the maid of honor and Parker’s young son Tyler was the best man. There was wonderful food, free-flowing booze, and a roof-top reception overlooking the gleaming cityscape of New York. Claire kept pinching herself, making sure that she hadn’t dreamed the whole thing, but sure enough there she was. She locked eyes with Parker over and over through the evening and thanked her lucky stars every time she remembered that they were each others to keep.

At some point in the evening, Claire had felt a tap on her shoulder and found herself face-to-face with a diminutive, important-looking man in a seersucker suit jacket.

“Congratulations, Claire,” the man said, “You look beautiful in white.”

“Thank you very much,” Claire said graciously, “You’re going to think that I’m terribly rude, but I don’t think we’ve ever met.”

“No, we haven’t. I own one of the biggest private art galleries in the city,” the man went on, “Parker’s an old friend, and he showed me some of your photographs. The long and the short of it is that I love them. I want to set a private gallery show as soon as possible. What do you say?”

Parker winked at Claire over the man’s shoulder and raised his glass. Claire nodded dumbly, amazed at her continued good fortune. Her career, love life, and future were sewn up with one wonderful thread at twenty-two, and she knew exactly who to thank. How in the world could things get any better for her?

“Claire!” Savannah rushed through the crowd and grabbed onto her best friend’s arm. “I’m so happy for you! You really hit the jackpot, huh? I can’t really picture you as a step mom, but I’ll be you’ll be the envy of all the moms on the block. By the way, I think you’ll really like my wedding present,” she said devilishly, “I think that you and Parker will get a lot of use out of it.”

“Savannah, what...?” Claire said, but felt a strong hand on her upper arm. She turned around to see Parker staring at her hungrily.

“May I steal my bride away from you, Savannah?” he asked.

“Of course,” the girl grinned, “You two have fun!”

“Oh, we will,” Parker said, “Oh, and Savannah? I’ve got my eye on you. No more funny business with my wife.”

“Who, me?” Savannah cooed, giving her best angelic expression that neither Parker nor Claire bought for a moment. “Have a good wedding night, darlings!”

Claire, in a haze of ecstatic delirium, felt Parker’s strong arms lead her through the rooftop gathering, toward their penthouse bridal suite. Just before they reached the door of their room, Parker scooped her up into his strong arms and carried her across the threshold.
