The device that saved me on the street kept my Jeep at the studio. I called a cab and the driver dropped me off in front of the deli.
Like before, I got âahead of the lineâ service. I thought the drive give me enough time to adjust to the situation. I donât know if it did but my heart still pounded as I sat at the table. It only increased when I saw him slowly approach.
Despite my understanding of his true nature, I couldnât help but admire whatever it was that stood before me. If this was one of those science-fiction movies, he might be a tiny alien with a body suit or maybe a lifelike robot. I shook my head. No, thatâs not it. My intuition wasnât good lately, but I knew that was him â whatever he was.
Later, I could ask him why he looks so human. For now, my body couldnât help but respond to eons of evolutionary instinct. He was a good-looking piece of eye candy no matter where he came from. Those thick biceps and cut chest, were attractive on our planet for sure. I wondered if that was the same on his.
He sat down, and I stared up into his deep blue eyes â for the first time. Iâve seen them before but this is the first time they were real.
Kudos, you out acted the actress.
They werenât the eyes of an admitted usual fanboy, a potential stalker, or even a producer. For the first time, I saw him.
I didnât have a name for his accent but it still rang out when he spoke. That crisp yet almost music tone made me breathe in deep. âI apologize.â His lips pressed together hard until it was a fine line.
âDid Ally tell you to say that?â
He shook his head. âNo. She doesnât believe I should trust you.â
âWhat about trusting you?â I said. Is âCarlâ even your name?â
He tilted his head. âItâs close to my name. Youâd spell it K-A-H-R-E-L.â
I thought about everything that happened and still couldnât say he lied to me â although he walked the edge damn close. Honestly, if I was in their position, Iâm not sure I would extend the same courtesy. Yes, I was mad. So much, I couldnât understand my feelings.
His story was true. I could feel it now and understand the secrecy. It didnât mean I had to like it. I lowered my voice just in case of eavesdroppers. Humanityâs wondered about life on other planets. My own industry painted them with every brush. There were benevolent invaders with chrome robots, space Nazis, to even cute ones with long glowing fingers that loved candy.
Iâm sure there were questions about science, the nature of the universe, religious thoughts, or even the name of their planet. I almost embarrassed myself with my question, but asked anyway.
âSo you traveled all this way and my showâs part of your mission?â
Nothing against my talent but really? Thatâs what Iâm asking?
He nodded. âOverall the answer is yes.
