Chapter 7

God, my head hurts. I’m never drinking again. Although Trish’s formula is perfect to prevent me from making a fool out of myself when I’ve had a few too many drinks, it does little to lessen the hangover the morning after.

I thought I was doing so well. It’s clear from the pain that’s overtaken my body I might have underestimated how much I drank last night. My head is pounding, my stomach is rolling, and my head is so heavy I can barely lift it off of the pillow. Slowly, I open one eye and blinding sunlight greets me. I extend my left arm, hoping to caress Max’s warm body, but the bed is empty. Where did he go?

I roll on my back and painstakingly lift my heavy body from the bed. When I sit up, Max is sitting bare-chested with a white towel wrapped around his waist at the desk, already busy at work. Without even turning away from his laptop, he dispenses his words of wisdom.

“Too much partying and too much pounding doesn’t do the body good the morning after. Considering the fact you’ve been moaning for the past couple of hours, I’m surprised you haven’t thrown up all over the bed.”

“All right, I might have had too much to drink last night and you pounding me like a caveman surely didn’t help.” I brush my unruly hair off my face.

“I had a sneaking suspicion you’d have a rough time this morning, so I took the liberty of ordering a bottle of liquid capsule Advils, a dozen bottles of filtered water, some plain yogurt with a side order of raw sugar and muesli to help soak up the alcohol from your stomach,” he says, swiveling on his chair to face me. “My mom always gave us yogurt sprinkled with a little sugar when we had the slightest tummyache. She’s convinced yogurt coats the stomach and heals everything. I’ve relied on her tried and tested recipe every time I’ve had too much to drink and what can I say? Mother knows best. Although yogurt is not part of the Brazilian culture or that of our Portuguese and African forefathers, my mother has adopted the superfood since the first time she tasted it in Geneva when my father took her there for their honeymoon. She might have been one of the first women in America to make it a staple on her grocery list.” He chuckles, shaking his head.

“Your mom sounds like a caring woman and quite the pioneer.”

“I’m sure she’s as caring as yours, sweetness.”

Ah. I’ll have to tell him about my parents.

“Come on. Get up, sit over there and eat a spoonful or two of food. You’ll feel much better in no time,” he says, getting up to help me out of bed. I’m too weak to protest and I hold on to him like a crutch as I wobble my way up, but when I stand to my feet, I feel the sudden urge to run to the bathroom.
