The phone alarm sounded and John reached over to turn it off. He was tired and wanted to sleep longer, but he had work to do so he got up. For John, the best way to wake up was to go for a run, so he dressed and headed for the door. He thought about waking Adam to join him, but he needed the quiet time. The dream sat heavy on his mind and he wanted to think about it, to better understand what it meant to him.
John knew it was about the coming disaster; that much of the dream was obvious to him. The mist and curtain probably represented the approaching disaster, probably the ash itself, but the staff and the little boy stumped him. He had no idea what they meant. John ran on, taking the shorter of his routes, a quick three-mile course.
When he returned home about forty-five minutes later, Jenna was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Adam was at the breakfast table reading John’s morning paper. Adam didn’t seem bothered that John didn’t ask him to run, so John didn’t say anything about Adam messing up his paper. Instead, he walked over to Jenna and pecked her on the cheek with a kiss.
“I’m gonna go jump in the shower. I’ll be back in a minute.”
While showering, John considered the luxuries he enjoyed at home, like hot showers, for one, and how all their luxuries could be gone in a very short time. He was thinking about how they would shower and use the toilets when the water stopped flowing. Sanitation was also going to be an issue.
He wasn’t worried about the sewers backing up—they had a septic system—but they would need to go, and going outside when the ash was falling would be stupid and dangerous. Toilets wasted a lot of water, so when it wasn’t running, they would have to consider something else. Perhaps an empty five-gallon bucket? But that would really stink.
John, demanding to pull his own weight as a platoon leader, did pulled poo-burning detail in the desert with his Soldiers. He would pour gasoline on the solid waste that was collected in a cut metal drum and then light it with a match and watch it burn. He would stand nearby and occasionally stir the burning waste with an engineer stake to ensure that it was completely destroyed. Wouldn’t Jenna just love poo-burning in the yard?
A hot shower would probably be the least of their concerns, but cleanliness was important to mental and physical health. Along with poo-burning, Desert Storm also forced John to go without a shower for many months. To get around that issue, he bathed regularly out of a plastic wash tub. He had a small plastic solar-shower to rinse with after soaping up. For John, it was all about removing the grime. He knew they were many, including his company commander, who went several weeks without bathing. They looked nasty, John remembered, and smelled even worse.
For the most part, John lived out of his Bradley Fighting Vehicle, but it wasn’t an RV.
