Josh and I sit on his roof, eating tiramisu flavored gelato out of a container from his freezer. Though the morning air is cool, we’re bundled in jackets and the chill is refreshing as we study the shades of pink and coral illuminating daybreak in brilliant brushstrokes.

“I finally understand why you love this view.” I struggle with my spoon, which is stuck in the gelato.

“I’m partial to last night’s view.” Referring to the magical snowfall he created, Josh offers me his spoon.

The snowfall and the kisses we shared last night fill my heart with joy. “Me, too.”

“I guess there’s no place like home.” He tugs the spoon free, holding it in the air. It’s bent. “You’re a menace.”

Our laughter fills the morning air. “I am. Just be glad I haven’t shattered any glass since I met you. Alec’s car wasn’t so lucky.

“Ouch! The Shelby?” Josh grimaces.

“Afraid so.” I offer him a taste from my spoon. “By the way, the fact that last night’s view represented home isn’t the only reason that it means so much to me.”

“I know.” He points to the container. “And in case you haven’t noticed, I’m trying to impress you. Gelato for breakfast isn’t something I share with just anyone. This is a first for me.”

In his tone there is a vulnerability, despite his teasing. This guy doesn’t let people in. Maybe that’s why I can’t hide my smile. Because in a world where everything seems to be a first for me, like a fish out of water, I’ve found someone who is going out of his way to give me his firsts.

He’s trying to make me feel less like an outcast, less like a freak. I know it. I don’t know how I know it, but I do. And it endears him so much more to me.

Josh brushes a chunk of hair out of my face. “I don’t know which I like better – the indigo or crimson.”

“How is it that you have a way of making freakish blue and red hair sound attractive?”

Spooling the red streak between his fingers, he adds in a teasing tone. “Because I find you attractive. Your hair color doesn’t matter.”

“Speaking of color,” I feed him another spoonful of our breakfast dessert as I study his black leather jacket and black shirt underneath, “Why are you so obsessed with black and navy? Do you even own shirts in any color that isn’t dark?”

He zips his jacket. “Black reflects my inner self, I guess.”

“No, it doesn’t,” I wave my spoon in the air. “You aren’t dark. Besides, a light blue shirt, or green, would look amazing with your eyes.”

Studying the horizon, Josh exhales. “There’s your answer. I don’t want to draw attention to my eyes.”

“Heterochromia is nothing to be ashamed of. It makes you unique. Adds to the mystery that is Josh Findlay.”

He looks at me, his expression humorless. “I wasn’t born like this.”

His admission catches me off guard.

“I was born with hazel eyes. I failed a test and as some form of punishment, one eye turned blue and one green.
