“I’M NOT WRITTEN ABOUT in history books,” I started, my voice a little shaky, the words flying to my tongue without consultation from my brain. All I could think about was that Liam and Alyssa had such a history and Liam and I had only yesterday. She consumed his memories; I was surprised he could remember my name. “I’m not etched like a bas relief in your mind.”

I couldn’t bear to watch Liam and Alyssa so I focused on Mackenzie, who encouraged me with a nod of her head.

“I’m not even on the tip of your tongue.” I gripped the mic tight in my palm, my knuckles going white. The only other time I’d written a poem before was during my ninth grade poetry curriculum in English class and we had to use iambic pentameter. Somehow, this free flowing, free form, stream of consciousness drabble seemed harder. I kept speaking, plucking the words directly from my heart. “I’m a clean slate.”

A holler ripped through the crowd, forcing my eyes up from my feet and toward the guy cupping his mouth with his hands. Liam.

I straightened, standing just a bit taller. “A leap of faith.” As the words left my mouth, I realized they rhymed. I cringed, remembering Alyssa’s firm stance against couplets.

A few snaps rang out from a group of girls in the front row.

My words grew more confident with each line. “A promise.” My mind started planning ahead, finding rhymes to the previous words that matched my heart. I blurted them in a row. “That I won’t make the same mistake.” I took a breath. “And break.” My eyes locked on Liam’s and my voice dropped to a whisper. “Your heart.”

I stopped there, letting the last word resonate with the audience, with Liam. My heart beat in tune to their snaps. I wasn’t sure what had come over me but I liked the feeling. I flitted off the stage, buoyed by the reaction.

And was greeted with a sharp glare from Alyssa. I’d managed to forget she existed for all of three seconds while the rush of being on stage consumed me. She lounged back on the couch, her features narrowed into thin lines. “I don’t buy it.”

Liam pulled me onto his lap, securing his arms around my waist. He felt so warm beneath me, so right. And yet so utterly wrong and fake. This was all still a ruse. “Honestly,” he muttered. “I don’t care what you think.”

I squeezed his knee. Not in a sexual make-the-hobag-next-to-me-jealous way but in warning. If he wanted this girl back, he had to play a little less hard to get. Even as I was making a hard play for him.

A smug smile twisted Alyssa’s features. “Sure you don’t.”

Liam nuzzled his face in my swath of hair, his nose grazing my neck in a way that made goosebumps shoot down my back and along my arms. Desire spiraled through me, spreading downward. My hips urged to roll on top of his lap, to spin around and straddle him.
