Just in time, the rabble was held back in the city by the closing of the gate. The little troop of Protestants had to put up with going, under the aforementioned escort, around the city to Burtscheid. To be sure, the soldiers shot at the mob that gathered on the rampart and city walls, but since they shot with blanks, as ordered, the Protestants had to continue on their way under a continuous rain of stones and offensive insults.
