Chapter Seven

Did that last visit to Arthur’s apartment really happen?

I sit in my makeshift office in front of my PC screen doing what I can to keep the landlord out of my head. Maybe somehow I just imagined the whole thing? My mind is all over the place. Plunging up and down between feeling sure I’ll never forgive myself and a ravenous sexual excitement about what I watched Mr Boseman do.

Part of me feels like I’ve totally ‘betrayed’ (for want of a better word) my wife. But even as I threw her underwear into the shower tray to try to soak away the evidence I was engulfed by the eroticism. The ultimate evidence of another man’s sexual desire for my wife. Undeniable proof that even at his age, this man, our landlord, couldn’t contain a natural ‘hardwired’ urge to procreate with someone like Kelsey - if given the chance.

Even holding that thought again now I’m aware it’s so perverse that few could ever appreciate it.

I glance again at the screen front of me. My body tenses. A new email from Arthur. I feel sick. I don’t trust myself now as far as he’s concerned. I have to tell Kelsey. Not ‘everything’ of course, but she needs to know we have financial problems. There has to be some other way to get some more money fast and get out of debt to this disgusting old man.

Kelsey and I are sat at the table having our evening meal that night by the time I’ve told her.

“How can we be? We’ve got all that money from your redundancy and you’ve already done some work for one company haven’t you?” Kelsey puts down her knife and fork and looks at me across our dining table.

“That company did a runner. We never saw any money from them. Kelsey, I’ve put everything I had into marketing this business but it’s taking a lot longer than I ever thought it would. The rent on this place and all the costs of running it are so much more expensive than the last apartment.”

Kelsey’s eyebrows knit together as she listens to me.

“The simple fact is that we’re spending too much, both of us. Acting like we still have two salaries coming in or that all the severance money is still there.”

“Can’t we get another loan from the bank?” her shoulders have slumped and her eyes started to fill up.

“I don’t think the bank would give us another. But I’m trying to get some sort of a night shift somewhere. That would work around being here for the business in the day.” I reach out and take her hands across the table.

“Come on babe don’t be upset. Arthur thinks I’m in with every chance of a couple of contracts from a friend of his and I’ve had some enquiries for other little jobs as well in the last couple of days.”

“You could ask your Dad for help. I know it might be difficult to go him but…“ Kelsey’s voice is quiet and she’s looking at her hands.
