Pictures

We slept like babies that night.

In the morning we talked briefly about the evening as we cuddled in bed, drinking coffee. We both said, as we always did, that we had had fun, and that we still felt the same about one another, which was true.

She went off to play tennis with Nelu and I played racquetball with my friend Martin. After he beat me three matches in a row, we showered. Martin, my college roommate, is an athlete and a lady’s man. In the shower, I noticed, not for the first time, his impressive endowment, which the guys used to joke about in college. Seeing it after my adventures with Anne, though, gave me a start. He was like an Alpha. I was a Beta.

We went to lunch at a patio in Union Square after our game and caught up.

He was doing well, travelling for a software company, making good money, but he had recently split up with his longtime girlfriend, Alice.

“She finally got sick of your shit, did she?” I asked.

“She finally got sick of me cheating on her,” he said, shaking his head ruefully. He had been routinely sleeping with women as he travelled, and Alice had snooped on his phone and found out.

“That’s too bad,” I said. “Alice is awesome.”

“I know,” he said, laughing. “I may have too many wild oats to sow.”

He asked about Anne and I said we were doing well.

“You better do your best to keep her happy, dude,” he said. “You are punching way above your weight class there.”

The conversation unnerved me. He and I had always been competitive in a friendly way, and in college he was always more popular with the girls than I was. Now it seemed to me that I was embracing my secondary status, and somehow spending time with him cemented it in my mind. I was preoccupied by strange thoughts and feelings as I drove home. Not for the first time, I wondered if I was making a mistake.

When I got home, I discovered Celeste was sitting with Anne on our balcony, having a glass of Pinot Grigio.

“What a lovely surprise!” I said.

She looked amazingly cute in a skimpy patterned summer dress. Anne was still in her tennis clothes.

They both rose to kiss me. As I finished kissing Celeste, I noticed with a start that, next to the sweating bottle of wine, in the middle of the patio table, the riding crop was sitting.

“I wanted to come hear about your adventure,” said Celeste. “And when Anne told me she had pictures I decided to come over.”

“Pictures?” I said.

Anne held up her phone.

“Mariko sent them,” she said. “Want to see?”

“Pics?” I said. “On your phone? That doesn’t seem very secure.”

“Don’t worry,” said Celeste. “Colonel James does security for a living. The pics are in a safe app. They can’t be forwarded or shared. So, do you want to see them?”

“Oh God, I don’t know,” I said. “Do I?”

I suddenly felt shy.

Celeste plucked the phone from Anne’s hand.

“I’m not sure we should make it so easy for him,” she said.
