Chapter Eight

It didn't. Ky was as distant as ever. I didn't see him until lunch where he went back to sitting at his table with his friends. Not that I had expected him to sit with me again, but a wave or any type of acknowledgement that I was alive would have been nice. The guys that Emmett had yelled at the day before didn't have the same lunch that we did, so I couldn't see if my brothers were back to normal with the entire football team. But the ones that they typically sat with were still at the table, and Emmett seemed back to his joking, fun-loving self.

"Are you going to stop staring any time soon? Because it kind of makes me feel like I'm eating lunch all alone," Tori said, and I turned in my seat to face my friend and my lunch tray. The latter wasn't appealing in the least, but I had to down some of it if I wanted to avoid a hunger headache later.

"Sorry. I was trying to observe the twins with their friends. See if everything is normal again."

"And?" Tori asked.

I nodded. "It seems like it is. Do you have any more evidence about what could have been going on with Emmett on the field yesterday?" I asked and then took a big bite of Salisbury steak and regretted it immediately. Definitely should have stuck with the potatoes.

Tori shook her head as she picked at her own meal. I guessed whatever she had been assuming about the situation was way off and she didn't want to talk about it. Tori hated being wrong.

"Why isn't Elijah here?" I asked, realizing we were back to being just the two of us.

Tori nodded her chin in the direction of my brothers' table. "We decided it might be best for the two of us to have some of our own space during the school day."

That didn't sound good.

"Is everything okay?" I asked.

Tori nodded and then shrugged as if she wasn't sure how to answer.

"I think he's mad because I kept pressing about what happened yesterday, but I feel like we shouldn't keep secrets. He said it wasn't a secret, but it was something he didn't want to talk about. I asked how that wasn't the same thing, and then he stopped texting. I heard nothing from him for the whole rest of last night, so I was surprised when he opened the car door for me on the way to school and then sat by me."

That was all I'd seen of them so I had no idea there was trouble brewing in paradise.

"He walked me to class and then I asked him if I was going to see him at lunch, and that's when he gave me the line about space."

I realized for the first time that her eyes were red, and I knew my best friend well enough to know that that wasn't her “already cried” face but her “I'm on the verge of tears” face.
