PHOEBE
I couldnât get out of bed after hearing the news about Miss G. The following day, the news stations covered the story and showed us the isolated wooded area where they found the car. The realization of it was too much. The dozens of police officers. The yellow crime tape. The body bag. Miss Gâs body.
Iâd been sick to my stomach since and unable to face anyone. I even missed my first day at the art supply store, my new job.
I rolled over on my wet pillow, away from Momâs rapping at the door.
âHoney, thereâs a boy here to see you. Can we come in?â
Ethan? I lifted myself up on an elbow. I hurriedly sat up and smoothed a hand through my frizzy strands. I tugged the blanket high across my shoulders because I only wore a nightshirt. âCome in.â
Mom opened the door and ushered Ethan inside. She gave me a curt smile but left, leaving the door wide open. Shortly after, her bedroom door closed. Ethan kept near the door, one hand in his pale blue hoodie pocket, the other clutching his backpack.
âYou werenât returning my calls, so⦠I brought your homework.â He took a step forward. âHow are you holding up?â
I shrugged. âAnd you?â
He shrugged, too. His bag slipped to the floor as he came to sit beside me. His eyes landed on his painting on the wall. âJust worried about you. Were you really close to Miss G?â
I bit my lip and nodded. âShe was my confidant,â I whispered. âWho could do something so awful? Kill her and just leave her there alone like thatâ¦â My voice broke into a quiet sob.
Ethan put his arm around me. âThe police will catch the creep responsible.â He gave me a sad smile and plucked a strand of hair from my face. âHey.â He bumped his shoulder with mine. âI used the front door this time. No thorns.â He lifted his butt at me, making me chuckle.
The blanket dropped from around my shoulders, and he eased underneath to hold my hand. Our fingers interlaced, and both our hands rested against my bare thigh. Ethan licked his lips nervously. âUm, about Saturday night⦠Is it a bad time to discuss that?â I shook my head. âOkay. Because Iâve been thinking about it a lot. And just wondering, like, what happens now? Or what did any of that mean? Like, should I back off? If it was only a hookup, Iââ
I cupped his chin, turned him to face me, and pressed my lips to his. Even after I pulled away, his eyes remained shut. I smiled, pecking him on the nose. He opened one eye. Giggling, I snuggled into his arm, resting my head against his body.
âLetâs not think too much about it. Whatever happens, will happen, okay?â I peeked up at him. He nodded with a satisfied smile.
