Eleven

LANA STARED AT the phone as it buzzed and rang in her hand. It was Susan. She’d somehow found her. It must mean that whoever’s body she was in was calling from Susan’s phone. Lana questioned if she should even answer it. She kept looking at the phone, feeling it vibrate in her palm as she paced around her new surroundings.

Finally after what seemed like a minute the music ringtone stopped. Bette had crappy taste in music but she’d fix that. She put the phone down and it immediately began ringing again. After about thirty seconds she decided to answer.

“Hello?” Lana said speaking softly but still with a slight edge to her voice. She couldn’t be sure that Bette’s mother wasn’t outside the door.

“Hello. Is this Lana? This is Bette.”

The line went silent and Bette wondered if was because she had a bad connection.

The phone rang a third time and Lana considered letting it go to voicemail but feared the message the girl Bette might leave behind and she didn’t know the passwords.

“What?” she said in a huff.

“Please don’t hang up. This is Bette Locke.”

I perked up anxiously. She’d answered Bette’s call this time and hopefully wouldn’t hang up on her again. I was already furious that Lana had hung up on her the first time. From where I watched, I could only try to control my overall irritation at the entire fiasco.

“This is Bette, you say? How can that be? How do I know you aren’t lying or spoofing a number to prank call me?”

Bette looked at the phone in disbelief. I looked at Lana. She wasn’t upset enough about this switch and what it meant. I could see she was a little too comfortable with the situation.

“Why would I lie to you? I have no reason. I just want my body back and I’m sure you want the same thing. Right?” Bette said quickly.

“Well...actually...not really. I’m thinking you’ve got a pretty good life going for you here, from what I see. Your mom came in to check on me early this morning when I woke up and so did your sister. Both seem really nice and caring. My parents would’ve let me scream or come in to tell me to shut up because I was keeping them up. No, I’m not in a rush to get back in that body.” Lana spoke arrogantly into Bette’s phone as she ran her hands over the pretty comforter.

Bette stared at Susan’s phone being held by this stranger’s hands. She was in disbelief.

Lana continued speaking as Bette could hear her picking up and putting down things in her room.

“This gives me a chance, a second chance at a good life. One without all the drama and the past holding me down. Any mistakes I might have made will be erased and I would never have to worry about it. You know?”

“No mistakes are erased. They still are. What are you talking about? A second chance? This is your life and that is mine!” Bette shouted surprised by what she was hearing.
