After eleven miles of driving along a series of torturous backroads towards the base of an 11,000-foot mountain range, Shepard pulled over in a small grove of mature sycamore trees.
Since fleeing the cartel warehouse, he had largely stayed on the slickrock routes that wound through the mountain passes, making his way west.
The neurotoxin in his system was now in full force. His eyelids were beginning to flutter uncontrollably, and his heart rate was dramatically increasing with each passing mile.
There was no way to push through this, and he knew he was in for, at the very least, probably twelve hours of the shakes, involuntary twitching and possibly even convulsions if things got really bad.
Shepard walked the dirt bike into the back of the grove then leaned against the trunk of a tree, scanning the valley below, where heâd just come from. He pulled the binoculars out of his pack, glassing the foothills in either direction for wisps of dirt on the road from a vehicle or for any sign of cartel lookouts. He had to constantly re-examine the area due to his eyes watering from the constant fluttering, as if his eyelids were attached to electric leads.
When he was sure his passage had gone undetected, he removed the AK from his back and rested it against the tree then rummaged through his pack, sucking down a half-liter of water. He dumped out five cellphones heâd taken from the dead men back at the warehouse, quickly checking each one for the absence of passcodes. Finding one, he held it up, seeing it had one bar.
Shepard knew that making a direct call to Vogel was out of the question, as this regionâs transmissions could still be monitored by whomever had the technology to jam their comms.
No way I can risk putting a bullseye on Vogel and Foleyâs locationâ¦or my own.
As he thought about his next move, he stared out at the wild expanse of raw Sonoran Desert that extended to the south for seventy miles, reliving the events of the previous night when his world turned upside-down in mere minutes.
Viper, you better be out there raising hell.
He thought back to the explosion, knowingâhopingâthat Viper and Nolan had probably taken up a perimeter on the side of the helicopter that heâd be approaching from.
Which means they were a short way off from the bird when it blew.
He lowered his head, knowing that even if they did survive, they were facing similar challenges in getting out a message and determining their way back home. All he wanted was to see their faces againâ¦and to get the hell back to the States. Instead, he was alone, on foot and partially incapacitated.
Shepard knew that home was only seventy or so miles to the north, but it was comparable to walking through a valley full of Taliban, and by now, every cartel scout would be on the lookout for the Norteamericanos.
Cal shook his head, thinking of the irony of how throngs of pale-faced Americans from the Midwest
