Pain lived in every fiber of his being, burning through his skin and muscles until his bones shook with the effort to carry him in his flight, but that wasn't what slowed him down. Streams of tears clouded his vision and caused him to trip over every tree root and small bush in his path.

The anger and horror on Manning's face as he'd realized what Quinn was seared his heart like a branding iron. How could he have been so stupid? He'd known the risk of staying at Manning's house, yet he'd ignored it in favor of his fucking hormones. Hormones he knew might have a chance of setting off unmated shifters just as they did trancers, and now his mate had seen the damning evidence of his true nature, and his curse.

Quinn stumbled over a fallen tree and hit the ground, his strength fading fast, but he pushed to his feet in stubborn determination. The slatted rooftop of Merebeth's cottage came into view about a quarter mile ahead. Just a little farther. It was imperative he pack his things and leave before Manning got there.

He couldn't bear to see the hatred on his mate's face when he came to demand answers, or even worse, send him back to France and into the hands of his tormentor. Quinn would rather die before that happened.

"Sweet Mother of Creation! What happened?"

"You know what happened," George ground out as he carried Quinn into the living room and laid him on the couch. "Take care of him. I'm going to kill that bastard."

Quinn tried to struggle against the couple's hands pushing him down but was too weak from blood loss. "Let me up."

"George―" Merebeth started.

"I told him. You told him not to bring Quinn around other shifters until he was ready."

"I was going to tell you to take care of Quinn yourself. I'm the only one who can stop Manning. I'm going to tan that boy's hide and make him wish for death."

"No!" Quinn shouted. "It's not his fault. There's something wrong with me."

Merebeth came around to his front and clamped one hand onto the wound on his neck, using the other to remove the tatters of his shirt. "Sweetie, you're the Aucinthe. You haven't gotten that far in the book yet, but there is nothing wrong with you. Manning was careless and ignored our warnings."

"Beth, he's losing too much blood. We need to get him a donor," George said, assessing the injuries on his arms and chest.

"I know of a human. Get my phone."

Just then, the furious roar of a feline
