Chapter Twelve
Abigail
I stood in the kitchen, well fed and dressed in black. I was already in a mood because Simon had left before I woke and waiting for Levi to get ready wasnât improving it.
I hadnât been to the PIB office since before we took down Samuel, when I worked on my last case, and that seemed like it was further away than a week.
Wrinkling my nose, I crossed my arms as I considered how this meeting was going to go. Levi wouldnât give me any indication about the exact subject, but I had a feeling it had something to do with Lizâs case.
Mario and Levi walked in.
âAbout time.â I dropped my arms. âLetâs get this over with.â
âImpatient tonight?â Mario asked with a teasing smile.
I rolled my eyes. âI have better things to do than meet with PIB tonight, and since itâs not like they are going to hand me a case, Iâd rather stay here and work with Zayne.â
Mario nodded. âYeah, I donât think they are going to hand you a case, either.â
I glanced at Levi. âWant to expand on that?â
âNo, Iâm just going to tell you to keep your temper in check,â he muttered, and I wanted to know why he was hiding something from me. Why not just tell me what the meeting was about?
I raised a brow. âReally want me going in blind to a situation where you tell me I have to keep my temper?â
Levi actually chuckled. âI donât want to cloud your judgment, nor do I want you to jump to the worst possible conclusion.â
âOkay, letâs go then.â I held my hand out. âWhen do I get to learn the jumping from place to place thing?â
âItâs not as easy as it looks, Princess,â Mario said. âIt takes focus and concentration.â
âJust like the Cult spell, and I was getting better at that.â I shrugged.
Mario nodded. âIt might be similar, just no spell.â
âThatâs neat. Latin words are a pain in the ass to memorize.â
Levi took my hand. âYou two can discuss that later.â The kitchen disappeared, and I found us standing in front of the south PIB building. I wasnât sure what I was expecting to find. Part of me was expecting it to look different, but the only real difference was I could actually see shapes of people walking around in the office through the tinted windows. It was still the same four-story office building that Iâd been working at before I died.
I could hear the murmur of voices that seemed to come from everywhere. The traffic echoed in my ears, and I flinched at every break squeal and honk I heard.
âAbigail?â Levi asked.
âHow do you guys deal with the constant sounds? That last break sounded like it was only two feet away.â
He put a hand on my back and guided me into the building. The concrete walls blocked the noises some, giving me a bit of a break.
âYou get used to it. You block out sounds you donât need to hear, like white noise.â
âOkay, good.
