Chapter 10

“It’s you!” Emma said and took a step back to see Ryan, the balloon artist.

“What do you mean?” Ryan said in response, balancing the boxes that he restacked. He looked behind Emma and noticed that the supply closet door was open. Ryan looked over his shoulder. No one was in sight except the two in the darkened hallway.

“Look,” he said. “This might look bad. I mean it isn’t what it seems.”

“You took people’s decorations for their float, including mine. Why did you do this?” Emma said and a thought dawned on her. Could this guy be the one that sabotaged the ladder resulting in Rick’s death?

Emma took a step back and reached for her phone in her back pocket.

“Wait, what are you doing?” Ryan called out and set the boxes down to reach out for Emma’s phone.

“I’m calling the authorities. They need to know that you were the one that stole the items. There have been many reports submitted about the items. My sister even filed one for our turkey.” Emma pointed behind her toward the giant piñata that was visible inside the room.

There was a small part of Emma that was impressed that he could move these items into the back room with no one noticing. She knew moving all those sunflowers was not a simple task, let alone the giant turkey.

“Look, I will return everything back to their rightful owner if you don’t call the cops.”

“I don’t know. I can’t speak for anyone else, but some might retaliate. I heard from the motorcycle club that not having their stuff put them behind schedule. They might not finish their full design in time.”

Ryan looked down at the stuff that Emma put on the cart and stared deep into her brown eyes. The fine hair on the back of Emma’s neck raised. His stare was so intent that she got goosebumps. Rubbing her arms, Emma felt she was in a tough situation as well. She knew she should call the sheriff’s department to report the found items, but if Ryan was going to do the right thing and return the items, she didn’t want him to get in trouble.

“Okay, okay. You have me in a hard place. I will return everything, and if that person wants to report it, they can. I shouldn’t have taken the stuff.”

“Why did you?” Emma asked and felt relieved that he was doing the right thing.

“Every one of you has amazing floats that the community will love. I got jealous and wanted the floats to not be as great as they could. I mean, I’m a balloon artist. Nobody cares about me anyway.”

There was hurt on Ryan’s face. Emma sensed he wanted to be one of the larger performers in the parade. She took a moment to think of the best way to make the guy not feel so down. She knew how hard it was not to be popular. Emma had learned she had to live with herself, so if she didn’t start liking herself it was going to be a miserable life.
