Villain

The main antagonist in a heist story is often a rival gang leader who wants to get his hands on the loot stolen by the thieves. He is the hero’s equal in many ways but lacks the hero’s value system – this makes the antagonist both stronger (he will not hesitate to kill people) and weaker (he underes­timates the hero’s resolve to protect his own gang members). This antag­onist is pretty standard villain material – and as in any other stories, vil­lains can be an over-the-top eccentric or grotesque individual.

There may be other sources of antagonism in a heist story in the form of a member of a betrayer within the gang of thieves or a detective who is investigating their crimes and wants to arrest them. Neither of these usu­ally plays the main ‘villain’ role.
