Chapter Thirty Four
Terry Rubin was just wrapping up his reports and was getting ready to head home. Tonight, was spaghetti night and his wife Maria, WHO was of Italian descent, made some of the best meatballs Terry had ever tasted. He always thought it was her cooking that attracted him to her when they were first dating. Her parents had owned an Italian restaurant in Salt Lake City and it was obvious that she had learned to cook from the best.
Deep in thought about meatballs and fried mozzarella sticks, Terry snapped out of it as he walked past the conference room. Randall was sitting at the table with Josh and they were very rapidly typing on their laptops. Josh saw Terry standing in the hallway and waved for him to come in. Terry stepped into the conference room and walked over to the table. He was watching the computer screens on both laptops and was amazed at how fast Randall was typing away on the keyboard. The screens stopped moving and they all read what was on the screen in front of them.
Terry looked at the two men. âIs this for real?â he asked.
Josh nodded. âWe just confirmed it with NSA. They picked up the whole conversation on the encrypted sat phone. We only had one side.â
Terry looked confused. âCan you explain this to me so I understand what you have?â
Randall took over. âYou bet. We picked up a conversation between two people. They were talking quietly, but like we said, the whole space is one big voice tap so we get everything nice and clear. Just prior to these guys talking, one of the guys was talking on the sat phone. Even though it was in Spanish the guy definitely had a southern accent. Anyway, after we heard the conversation between the two guys on site we hooked up with the NSA to confirm what we heard and to see what was being said on the other end of the phone, since they get both sides of the conversation. They just sent us the translation transcript and we were confirming it with our translation from the site.â
âOK,â replied Terry. âWhatcha got?â
âThe local guy must have been talking to the big boss. He told the boss about making an example of one of the kids who tried to escape and that he had to slit his throat. The boss seemed pleased but also concerned. He wants to move up the shipping date to Sunday morning.â
Terry almost couldnât breathe. âHe actually said he had to slit a kidâs throat?â
âYeah,â replied Josh. âAnd he told the guy on the other end of the phone that he had the guard dispose of the body in the mountains.â
âHoly shit. If we can figure out which one did it, we got them. Nice work. Now what about this shipping date thing?â
Randall took over. âSounds like they were originally going to ship on Tuesday, but the big boss is edgy and wants to go Sunday morning.
