Chapter Nine

“What are you all blocking behind the door at the end of the hallway?” I shout at her.

I’ve already dropped her to the ground with my hands around her throat. Her face is red, her eyes are bulging and she’s clawing at my hands, but I dig in and tighten my grip. I know she can’t speak to me if she can’t breathe, and the point isn’t to kill her right away. I want her to feel my rage, know what I’m capable of and give me the information I want.

Then I’ll kill her.

I let go for just a moment and sit back on her stomach. In my kindness, I’m letting her catch her breath, but in my determination, I’m making damn sure she can’t move. She won’t be strong enough in this state to push me off of her and if she tries, I’m going to stomp on her fucking neck.

“No—” She coughs, her hands around her throat.

“No? You don’t want to tell me?” Or maybe she thinks she’s tougher than I am and is trying to see if I’ll actually kill her.

She shakes her head vehemently and coughs again, gulping in a huge grasp of air. “Nothing.”

I stare down at her for a moment debating about whether I believe her or not. The old Mina would, but that Mina died a long time ago. The new Mina, the one I’ve become doesn’t believe a fucking thing she can’t see.

I pull her hands away from her neck and put my hands around her throat again. I gently squeeze it between my hands as a warning that she had better not be fucking lying to me when I ask her the next question.

“Then why are you all clustered against it?” I ask in a low, stern tone.

“Please!” she sobs. The tears that are running down the sides of her face mean nothing to me. Life means nothing to me; not anymore. Not that the only person who’s worth saving is somewhere in this Hell with a madman that wants to do whatever he wants with me.

“Tell me, Marissa. This is your last chance,” I warn, pressing my thumbs against the fleshy center of her neck.

A sudden commotion catches me off guard in the hallway, and she manages to roll over, knocking me off of her.

What the fuck?

I find myself no longer concerned with Marissa, but more so curious about what’s happening outside the door. I also am starting to feel fearful again, and tell myself that I have to let it go. If I don’t, then I’ll never leave this fucking room and I’ll never know what I could have stopped or who I could have saved.

But as soon as I undo the lock on the door, as soon as I crack it slightly open, I feel her arm go around my neck and drag me down to the ground on top of her.
