CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

SETTLING THE SCORE

The field hospital set up outside Valjeco consisted of a few tents and medical personnel. The Germans here had not seen any real action in these parts for some time. Most of the patients were suffering from small arms wounds inflected by Chetnik or Partisan attacks. The two radio specialists working inside the back of the DF van had been killed in the Chetnik guerrilla attack the previous day; both burned to death as well as the driver. The passenger, however, suffered only second-degree burns on various sections of his body, along with a slight concussion; he was released.

Gerhert was seated on a field bed, his left arm and hand wrapped in dressing to protect the burns. He would fully recover, but would be in pain. Luckily, the burn was to his left hand, which did not affect his wireless radio capabilities. Obersturmbannführer Flosberg made the trip personally from Gestapo Headquarters and was seated next to Gerhert. Aside from the two SD men, there was no one else present inside the field tent.

“What can you tell me about the attackers?” ask Flosberg.

“Typical terrorist cowards, they attacked from the protection of a narrow alleyway. I did not see their faces very well. It was a man and a woman in their early twenties. The woman was small and petite, the man, short, stocky and built like a wrestler, with black hair. He sported Chetnik attire with one exception.”

“What’s that?”

“His boots—my driver pointed it out. I never noticed them until he mentioned it. The male attacker was wearing an excellent pair of high-quality US military jump boots. That’s something no ordinary Chetnik foot soldier would have.”

“Then you agree they could be the elusive spies we’ve been tracking?”

“Yes, it’s a very good possibility. I would say it’s about a ninety-five percent probability.”

“It’s time we settled the score. I’m getting impatient with our results thus far. My counterparts in Belgium and France are having tremendous success. I’m taking off the gloves. It’s time we go after these bandits with unconventional means. We are in the counter espionage business, are we not?”

Gerhert nodded his head, “What do you have in mind?”

“Abwehr is holding a high-ranking Partisan officer. He was unable to provide any useful intelligence under interrogation simply because the idiot doesn’t have anything, plus the Abwehr is run by a bunch of imbeciles. I can secure his release and transfer him over to us. In exchange, I’ll turn him to do counter-intelligence work for us just like we did to those weak-minded excuses for British officers. The Abwehr’s loss is our gain.”

“What’s the Partisan officer’s name?”

“He goes by Sava Crntza, a known, hard-core communist and a Major with the Partisan Fourth Zone in Slovenia.
