Creating the attribute to hold our picture

First, we need an attribute where we can assign a background picture. Start by entering attributes in the intelligent search box, but make sure you pick the item next to Pages & Themes, as shown in the following screenshot:

At the bottom of the screen, select Image/File as the type and click on Add:

On the next screen, enter all the details needed for the new attribute:

The value you enter in Handle is what you'll use to work with the attribute in the code and Name is what the end users will see when selecting a background picture.
