Chapter Nine

Matt disentangled himself from the soundly sleeping Camden an hour later. He climbed out of bed and pulled on a pair of boxer briefs then headed downstairs to clean up the mess of their clothes and used condoms in the living room. Once he’d done that, he dropped down on the sofa with his tablet. The secure connection was provided by Dillan’s allies in the Phantom colony.

He turned it on and began working on finding the password to get into Torque’s files. None of the names he’d tried earlier had worked, and he’d gotten frustrated. He took a deep breath and thought of all the names he’d tried earlier and then began going through the list again. This time, he considered every possible angle from a perpetrator’s point of view. Even pedophiles enjoyed taking trophies, so what could Torque have considered a fit trophy?

He considered the cases carefully and one stood out in his mind. Not the ones he was sure Torque was guilty of but hadn’t been able to get him on, but another. This case was similar to a case he’d been kicked off just after going after Torque. A thirteen year old boy. Torque liked them between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. He kept them three days and three nights before killing them and leaving them out someplace for someone to find. The last case he’d begun working, the thirteen year old boy had been found in his parents’ bed.

Torque had told him there was nothing sweeter than a babe in its momma’s arms. Nothing more precious than a sweet bit of warmth in the parental bed. He’d killed the boy there, but he hadn’t guessed that then. Now, he typed in a few words. The first four sets he tried didn’t work, so he typed in a fifth and the file unlocked for him.

More than a little perverse, he thought, but he didn’t take time to mull over the ravings of a sick mind. He dived in, looking for something that connected the American Hyde-Smyth to Torque and he found it within an hour.

“Hey.”

Matt looked up fifteen minutes after he’d fired up his computer to send copies of parts of the files to Dillan and Trace. He saw the lean male standing in the doorway of the living room in one of his old T-shirts with his hair mussed. His heart beat faster and something like butterflies played in his stomach. That was one sexy little man, and he was willing to bet Cam had no idea how sexy and sweet he was.

“Come here,” he said, and Camden came to him.

“I’m not exciting enough to linger with?” he asked in a tone that was a cross between humor and hurt.

Matt jerked his gaze back to Cam and saw the hint of hurt in his pretty green eyes. He reached over and sank his fingers into his hair and pulled the other man to him for a kiss. “Sorry, sweetheart, I just—thanks to how relaxed you left me, I was able to crack this damned password.
