Chapter 9

Carly’s Mate

Carly just stood there, and she was in shock. She had not only just seen her mate in wolf form for the first time, and he was gorgeous, but she had also seen two other male werewolves in wolf form picked up and tossed back from the edge of their yard as if an invisible hand had just grabbed hold and flung them away. What the hell didn’t even begin to cover it. She could hear Riley on the phone explaining that they’d been attacked and that he’d tell him the details when Damon and the others made it here. Riley was going to give her those details as soon as he got off the phone or...or she’d just pester him to death, yeah, that’s what she’d do.

She thought about Riley’s wolf, and he was a true alpha. Black as sin and beautifully built. His long sinuous legs were well muscled and fast. His eyes were still green, moss green and they shone with intelligence. His fur had been sleek and looked silky. She wished she had been with him, but she admitted to herself she had shut him out in her angst, and he could have been killed. He was off the phone now and looking at her cautiously. Maybe he expected her to yell or cry? She was over that emotional stuff and now she would just love him like she should have to begin with. Carly had just almost died so he should overlook her being out of sorts for a while.

“Tell me exactly what happened. I want to know it all including how your yard threw those wolves away,” she demanded.

“Our yard,” he corrected automatically.

“Our yard,” she agreed.

He smiled at her and she swore the sun was shining on her. She had everything as long as she had Riley. Carly needed to remember that, but for now she just had to know everything!

“You weren’t feeling very well, and the chili hadn’t cooked long enough yet, but thank goodness the cornbread was done, or it would have burned. I decided to get out of your hair for a little while and let you work through things. My wolf was chaffing to go run. He’d not been out yet, I hadn’t even morphed once and the woods, they were calling to him.”

She could understand, really, she could. Her wolf had been feeling tortured stuck in confinement in the hospital. It had been the small hospital that Mac’s pack owned and ran. It wasn’t far from pack lands, and it saw anyone who was in need. Mac had always been soft hearted, and Mandi was no less so. She urged, “Go on.”

He felt guilty for leaving not only without her, but without even telling her he was going. It was endearing that such a small thing could make him feel so bad. That showed her life with him would be about give and take.

Riley exclaimed enthusiastically. “I morphed. I did it in one shot!”

She smiled caught up in his excitement.
