Lea spent the weekend in her apartment, leafing through the guide given to her by Monica’s assistant. The fluorescent yellow cover shone bright on her coffee table as she sat, cross-legged on the couch, scribbling notes and highlighting passages.

The guide was a lot to swallow and even harder to believe. Shifters in the shape of bears, wolves, tigers, dragons and more. Vampires who roamed the English and French country sides, witches who lived in Italian villas. It read like an elaborate fairytale except there were photographs and personal retellings to back them up.

On Saturday evening Monica sent her an e-mail with a link to a password protected website and information on her new job.

Her new boss – James Moreno – was a shifter, a wolf like Richard, and she would be his personal assistant for one thousand dollars a week. Half of that would go towards paying back Monica, the other she could pocket for herself. Lea crafted another grateful e-mail before opening the website link and keying in the password.

It was a page of videos, interviews with paranormal creatures and the humans who were privy to know about them. Lea watched until her eyelids grew heavy, woke up and finished them off.

She learned the history of shifters, how they evolved from were-creatures, no longer dependent on the cycle of the moon. She learned how most shifters assimilated into human culture, hiding who they are, while a select few lived in remote locations around the world, where they’re free to showcase their abilities without discrimination.

She learned how important her secrecy was, for humans, throughout history, revealed they couldn’t handle living in harmony with Paranormals. They would rather criminalize and condemn them, than admit there were creatures far more powerful wandering the earth alongside them.
