Chapter Eight

Fjord wasn’t sure he was seeing things correctly. Was that Katron under the longhouse? He held his hand up, stopping the guards from moving, and then pointed to where the man was crouching. Fjord never thought he would be so glad to see the wolf. His heart was beating rapidly as he took in the man’s muscular form. There was no denying now that he wanted Katron in the worst sort of way.

Just seeing him made Fjord’s stomach knot and his palms grow sweaty. His throat had even dried out as his eyes drank every inch of the man in.

His eyes snapped over to the three guards standing between Katron and his freedom. They were leaning against the side of the longhouse, laughing, talking, and very unaware of what was right behind them.

Fjord knew he had to keep the guards unaware or Katron didn’t stand a chance in hell. But he wasn’t sure what to do to draw them away without letting the guards know he was there. It wouldn’t do to rescue Katron only to have his ass either put in a cell or killed.

That would be counterproductive.

“What do you suggest?” one of the guards asked. “We could create a diversion, but I’m not sure letting the village know we are here is a wise move.”

“I was just thinking the same thing,” Fjord whispered. “But we can’t leave him under the longhouse. He’s bleeding, and any second one of those guards is going to smell the blood.” What really bothered Fjord was that Katron was bleeding. Why was he bleeding? What had Craving a Lion

they done to him? All sorts of images came to mind, but Fjord quickly pushed them aside.

He needed to concentrate.

“I could go around to the other side of the village and make myself known,” one of the other guards suggested. “That would draw them away.”

“And that would get you killed. I’m here to save a life, not sacrifice one for the other,” Fjord replied. He may not be chummy with the guards, but every life was important to him. He was not going to have anyone sacrifice himself.

They just had to figure—wait, was that Joque coming out of the longhouse? Oh, this was not good. If he spotted Katron, things were going to go downhill, fast.

“Dirk’s son is heading over to where Katron is hiding,” one of the guards pointed out.

Fjord turned and looked at him a moment.

The guard shrugged.

He turned back around and worried his bottom lip, took a deep breath, and readied himself to run in and fight for Katron’s freedom.

But he didn’t have to.

What in the name of the king was going on? Was Joque drawing the guards away? Why? The man was Dirk’s son. Why would he draw the guards away? Did he know Katron was hiding a few feet away?

Yep, he did, because Joque looked back and gave Katron a subtle nod.

Fjord wasn’t sure what was going on, but he didn’t have time to stand around and analyze the peculiar situation.
