Rose Ryan sat on the sofa, her legs crossed, her hair tied back in a tight ponytail, so tight that it elongated her eyes slightly. She flicked through the phone, the smile on her lips widening as she counted the amount of missed calls.

With a tap of the screen they vanished and then she turned her attention to the three voicemails.

The first one had Bill sounding distraught.

'Jesus Christ, Rose, someone's killed Donna Clark, she was with me, we went out to discuss a possible,' he paused, 'promotion.'

Rose heard the dry click in his voice, a sure sign that he was lying.

'Some bastard killed her and dumped her in the canal and I need you to come down to the police station. I have to make a statement. As soon as you get this call me back.'

The message ended and Rose felt the anger flutter inside.

The second message was shorter, but no less desperate. 'Rose, please, I need you down here now. I promise I never touched the girl…' The message ended abruptly.

Rose grimaced, it was another stinking lie, even with the threat of the divorce hanging over his head Bill had still gone out chasing someone young enough to be his daughter.

The last message was more urgent as if the enormity of his situation was at last beginning to sink in.

'They think I did it‚ you know me, you know I would never, ever do something like that. Listen, I know I've been a shit and you have every right to hate me but…'

Rose flicked the phone off and tossed it onto the sofa. 'Yeah well, you got that one right, Bill,' she said as she reached forward for the glass of red wine.
