Chapter 12 - Harlow
I went back to the club with Diesel, trying to hide my disappointment that we hadn’t gotten to do more tonight. But whatever he got called back to the club for, it seemed important. I could see the stress on his face.
At first, I hadn’t asked. It felt out of turn. But as we got closer to the club, I couldn’t hold back my curiosity.
“What’s going on?” I asked Diesel.
“It’s that guy… the one we called the cops for.” He seemed fidgety.
“What about him? I thought your security team was going to handle it.”
“Me, too. I mean, they did. The police came and everything. But I guess the guy was hurt pretty badly.”
“How badly?” I asked.
“His, uh, skull was cracked.”
“Oh my God…” I muttered, my eyes wide. Had I killed a guy tonight?
As if reading my mind, Diesel then added, “He’s not dead. He’s just badly hurt. And now the police want to talk to me, to get my side.”
My heart began to quicken. I was the one who had cracked his skull, though. Was I going to get in trouble? I mean, it was completely in self-defense. The guy was dragging me out of the club to do who knows what with me.
What if the cops didn’t believe that? My anxiety was rising.
Diesel could definitely tell. Then again, it was probably pretty obvious. I was bobbing my right leg up and down like a madwoman.
“Hey, hey, relax,” Diesel told me. “It’s going to be okay.”
“What if it’s not?” I asked him. “What if they, like, take me to jail? What if I get arrested? God, the worst law I’ve broken until tonight was speeding by ten miles, and now I might go to jail?”
“You are not going to go to jail, Harlow.” He took his hand in mine, and I was surprised by how protective he felt. “I promise you. Look, you don’t even have to worry. I’ll take the fall with the police, okay? I’ll say I’m the one who hit him.”
“What? But… why would you do that?” I asked.
It was going to look way worse for him to have hit the guy than me. He wasn’t the one who was about to be assaulted. It wouldn’t look like self-defense for him. No doubt the cops were going to be way harder on him than me.
“Because I don’t like seeing you panic like this. Relax, I’ve got this.”
His driver pulled up to the club and parked.
I shook my head wildly. “No, Diesel, you can’t. It’s fine, don’t worry about it. I don’t want you to get in trouble.”
He smiled at me as he stepped out of the car quickly. “Don’t worry, Harlow. I’ve got this.”
He shut the door behind him, not letting me out right away. No doubt this was to give himself some time to go in and speak to the police before I could. I panicked as soon as he shut it.
It took me a bit to actually wriggle out of my seat. I was in heels, and the dress kept sticking a little bit to the leather.
