Chapter 2: The Blue Fire in the Crystal Ball

Lilith didn't bear the look of an impressed boss. At least, not the usual look. She had not spoken to Jett since before her capture, but she wasn't too keen on expressing worry about any of her trained minions getting snapped up, nor did she fathom it a great idea that they let the deputy and stagecoach live to tell the tale. Certainly now that they knew what Cherie and Luna looked like, there would be wanted posters all over town and what's more, they didn't conceal the direction they rode off in. What they should have done, Lilith thought, was ride off in a direction that was the exact opposite of their encampment, and not a direct line. It was a bit too late for regretting it however.

Lilith looked up at the night sky and marveled at the starry omen that streaked above the clouds. A comet soared high overhead and Lilith usually took such marvels as a harbinger of bad luck, like carrying around a black cat or breaking a dozen mirrors on Sunday. She walked over to Jett and embraced her conservatively.

"So, I trust that you didn't give those tin-starred cretins any of the info on our gang that they wanted, right?" Lilith asked her, trying to sound rhetorical.

"Of course not. You don't honestly think I would rat out my own, do you?" Jett replied.

"Not intentionally, no. In the past however there have been pretty clever ways they have employed to get my girls to give up some relevant information without them even being aware of it. That is what they train their lapdogs to do. Did you share a cell with anyone?" Lilith said, trying not to sound too assumptive.

"Well no. Not really. There was just this one drunk in the cell but that was for just a few minutes..." she started to say.

"They put a man in the same cell with you? You don't find that a little odd?" she asked.

"It seemed like they were out of room. The other cells were packed to the gills with vagrants from the saloon. And it was only for a few minutes. We hardly said anything to each other." Jett said matter-of-factly.

"Well what did you say to him?" Lilith demanded.

"Only which gang I was in, but they already knew that by my red sash" she said.

"Did they now." Lilith stated.

Jett looked up at the sky, hoping to change the subject.

Lilith looked up as well and spied the brilliant comet that sailed distantly in the night sky.

"Been a long time since I have seen one of those." Lilith said.

"I hear they only come around once in eons...or something akin to that." Jett said.

"We don't have anything to worry about, do we?" Lilith asked while still gazing heavenward.

"Uh uh" Jett said unemotionally.

Jett thought that Lilith's remark about not having anything to worry sounded more like a rhetorical statement than a question. Maybe she was holding back something. Maybe not. She wondered if she had just unintentionally chiseled a crack in their relationship.
