Chapter 9

It was just after eleven when Adrienne finally made her way downstairs the next morning. She was appalled by how late she had slept. Of course, it had been after two when Nick finally walked her back to the house the night before, and it had been after three before she’d finally fallen asleep.

She’d been in Bitterroot only a week and a day, and yet it felt as if she’d been here for months, given everything that had happened in such a short time.

She walked to the kitchen, where she found Cassie, Nicolette and Sammy preparing food for lunch.

“There’s the sleepyhead,” Cassie said with a grin.

“I can’t believe I slept so long,” Adrienne replied. “Between Nick keeping me out so late last night and everything else that has gone on in the past week, I guess I just finally crashed out.”

“You must have needed the extra sleep,” Nicolette replied. She stood at the counter, cutting up a head of cabbage for what Adrienne assumed would be coleslaw. Cassie was at the oven, where the scent of a cooking ham filled the air, and Sammy was busy setting the table.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” Adrienne asked.

“Pour yourself a cup of coffee and relax. We’ve got this covered,” Cassie replied.

“Are you Cowboy Nick’s girlfriend?” Sammy asked.

“Sammy!” Nicolette exclaimed, and Adrienne couldn’t help but laugh.

“No, I’m not Cowboy Nick’s girlfriend. I’m just a friend who he is helping out right now.” Adrienne poured a cup of coffee and then sat at the table.

“You’re pretty enough to be a girlfriend,” Sammy said and gave her a bright smile.

“And you’re quite the charmer this morning,” Adrienne replied.

“He must have been bitten by the charm bug overnight,” Nicolette replied lightly.

Sammy giggled, and Adrienne found herself relaxing into the domestic scene and the interaction between mother and child. She also envied the obvious close friendship between Cassie and Nicolette.

Adrienne didn’t have any close female friends. When she’d been raising Wendy there had been no time for friendships, no time for clubbing or doing lunch with anyone.

After Wendy had left Kansas City, Adrienne’s work was at home, and she rarely went anywhere to make friends. She’d always hoped that eventually she’d have that kind of relationship with her sister. She’d always hoped that Wendy would be her built-in best friend.

She shoved away thoughts of Wendy and what might have been and instead promised herself that when she got back home she’d find a book club or join a gym...do something and go somewhere in an effort to make new friends.

“Has anyone seen Nick this morning?” she asked.

“He stopped in earlier and said to tell you he had a few things to take care of and would see you sometime after lunch,” Cassie replied.

“About this afternoon, Cassie and I have a big favor to ask you,” Nicolette said.

“We know it’s a big imposition, but Nicolette and I have an appointment with a lawyer this afternoon for some business, and we were wondering if maybe you wouldn’t mind watching Sammy,” Cassie said.
