We walked for another hour and a half, and the sun was beginning to set before I saw it.

The bridge.

“Hey, guys, is that it? Is that the bridge?” I asked excitedly.

Newsome turned to look at me. I could tell, even with his mask on, that he was smiling. “It sure is,” he replied quietly. “Let’s find a spot to put Cooper down that has some cover so Blair and I can check it out. We need to make sure it’s clear before we go rushing out there. You can never be too careful. Let me call O’Neill, too, and make sure everything’s good on his end. I need to make sure he knows we’re here. Plus, I get to share the news that Cooper’s sick and ask him to have a doc on standby for him.”

We were walking on train tracks and found a place under cover of thick trees to set Cooper down in. He was sleeping again, and his breathing was getting more and more labored with every passing hour. I was starting to worry more and more about his situation. Without real life-saving measures, I wasn’t sure Cooper was going to make it.

“Hey, Newsome, when you call O’Neill and tell him about Cooper, can you make sure they’re set up for the more extreme life-saving measures covid cases might need? Cooper’s starting to get bad, and I’m worried he’s going to need the assistance of a ventilator to breathe soon, especially with his asthma.”

I could tell even by Newsome’s masked expression that he was surprised I was worried about Cooper, but he nodded in agreement before pulling the sat phone out of his pack to make the call.

As soon as the call picked up, I could hear yelling through the receiver. Newsome immediately pulled the phone from his ear. “What the hell is going on there, O’Neill?”

“We had a group of people come over the bridge and try to get into the bunker. We have to blow the bridge now! So, I hope you’re either here or prepared to get on a boat.”

“That’s actually why I was calling. We’re at the bridge entrance by the train tracks.”

“On the south side of the island, right?”

“Yeah, why?”

“The gang that tried to take over, they came from the north side. If I were a betting man, I’d expect they’d have more people heading to the south bridge for another opportunity to try and come over. That’s why I need to blow it now. We’ve already got two wounded from gunshots in their first attempt. We can’t afford to lose any of the people we have here, Newsome. You all included.”

“Well, thanks for the sentiment, but I’ve also got some crappy news. Cooper’s covid positive, and he’s in bad shape. Do you have doctors there yet ready to handle covid cases?”

“Shit... Yeah, we’ve got three doctors and seven nurses so far. We only have two confirmed cases on the island, and they’re in quarantine, but they aren’t showing dire symptoms yet, thankfully.
