Stamwick’s historical district was breathtaking, even this late at night. Of course, I only got a glimpse since we basically jogged through the entire quadrant to get to whatever hell the high priestesses led us to. Racing behind Alyssia, the terror of oncoming danger bubbled as we zigged and zagged from street to street, nearing the old bridge.

Except for Alyssia and I, two more junior witches joined tonight’s patrol and seven head witches. Counting the high priestesses, all of whom came tonight, we marched down the nightly city like a small army. In a way, I supposed that was exactly what we were.

“How much further?” I asked Alyssia, keeping my voice a step above a whisper.

My friend pointed to the pulsing lights in the distance, and my ears perked at the sound of sirens zooming by close to us.

“Almost there,” she answered. “The cops are dealing with the bodies, so we have some time before they expand the search.”

Bodies. Nausea filled me when I thought about the horrific scene the police uncovered. From what I knew of mind reapers—which wasn’t a lot—they messed with your head, leaving you a shadow of yourself with loose memories and even looser screws.

My eyes narrowed.

“I thought mind reapers don’t kill?” I asked.

Alyssia glanced my way, turning back to the path we were on immediately. “Mostly, no.”

“So what happened?”

“I know as much as you,” she responded. “Something probably went wrong, and they had to clean up their mess.”

Nerves gathered in my rib cage and goosebumps broke over my skin. I couldn’t believe how nonchalant Alyssia was being; as though we weren’t on our way to kill people in cold blood. Don’t think of them as people, I reminded myself, trying to get Alyssia’s previous words to register.

No matter what I tried, I couldn’t.

Shadowers may not have been human, but they looked human to me, and I was not looking forward to tonight. Sweat poured into my eyes, making them sting and turn red in seconds. My hands shook, and I reached into the back of my jeans, pulling out the spelled dagger Theodora gave me before we left the townhouse. On the hilt, runes scraped over my skin. I shuddered when I pictured myself using the weapon.

I was so lost in thought, I didn’t notice Sebyl come to an abrupt stop while the rest of the witches followed suit. My feet skidded to break, and I crashed into Alyssia’s back with a thud. She jerked forward, shooting me a side glance to make sure I was all right. I mouthed ‘sorry’ silently before peeking over her shoulder to see Sebyl motioning right and left.

The priestess’s eyes darted in each direction, scouring the area we were in with the intensity of a hound.

When I looked up, I realized she brought us right under the old bridge. My heart raced in my chest.

As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, figures came into view straight ahead of us. I tried to count how many, but it was too dark and the figures huddled together, giving me the worst vantage point possible.
