Chapter Eleven

Carter

He hasn’t slept with anyone but me in nearly a year?

The. Fuck!

What did that mean anyway? Was I supposed to give him a medal or something? And why tell me? Especially now when my life was falling the fuck apart.

I couldn’t have that conversation right now. Nope. Or deal with why he suddenly became so affectionate in public. Hell with public, Riley has never been one to show affection in private. Until last weekend all we ever did together was fuck and hang out. We were friends. Are friends. I like being with him. Hell, I’d classify Riley as my best friend. I like being with him more than anyone else I’ve ever slept with or didn’t sleep with, for that matter.

I just couldn’t. Not right now. Maybe I was running away. I don’t care. I just can not right now. I didn’t look back to see if he meant it. Or what exactly he was meaning. Like… What the fuck did he mean? That somewhere along the line he’d… stopped sleeping with anyone but me? As in became exclusively… Oh, Fuck. We became exclusive.

I took a couple of steps back, into a broad chest. I didn’t stop him from wrapping the arms attached to that chest around me.

“Pardon me. I was not paying attention to where I was going. Carry on,” I said, wondering who I was speaking to. The girls or… my lover?

In fact, I leaned against him and let him hold me. I breathed in his scent. The spicy cologne he favored mixed with ocean breeze. That’s how he smelled. Always made my stomach do strange little flips when I caught his scent.

“They play volleyball?” he whispered in my ear.

“Apparently,” I turned slightly to whisper back. My cheek grazing his. His dark stubbled jaw scraping me. Making me… all kinds of confused.

“Your serve, Twi.” The older girl tossed the ball to the second one. Twila. Dammit, got them mixed up.

“Looks like sand runs in the veins,” Riley whispered, resting his chin on my shoulder while we watched Twila serve. She did a decent job for a little girl. Not trying to be sexist. She is little. They all are. The fact that they’re girls has nothing to do with it. She managed to get the ball over the net with some force. She had an
