The elf took it with a raised eyebrow, turned it in his hands. Freyrík

could all but hear his questing thoughts. The cloth was sewn into a strip

about an inch wide, and was just long enough to . . .

Ayden's eyes snapped up and narrowed to slits. "This is a collar," he said flatly.

"Nay!" Freyrík said. "'Tis . . ."

"A neck belt, perhaps? To hold my shirt up?"

"A cravat," Freyrík said firmly. "Very fashionable, I assure you."

He felt the elf's stare on his throat, unyielding as a choking hand. "Yet you do not wear one."

Freyrík looked down, then sighed and looked back at Ayden, dropping

pretense in favor of earnest concern. "Please?" he said. "'Tis for your own safety. You may take it off soon enough."

Ayden studied him a moment longer, then shook his head . . . and tied

the befanged thing round his neck.

Freyrík only hoped 'twould be protection enough for him, a single elf

among eight thousand men and three hundred years of hatred.
