Chapter 8

“Hey!” Kenwood shouted as he stepped in front of Palmer, effectively blocking John. “Hold on there.”

“But he’s the killer!” John shouted, trying to get around Kenwood. “How could you let him go? Get him back in jail. Now! Get him out of here. Now! Now!”

“Please,” Kenwood said in a low and controlled tone. “ Let’s just calm down.”

“I can’t calm down when the man who killed the woman I loved is standing right there in front of me, grinning like an idiot.”

“Hey,” Palmer said. “No need to call me names.”

But John only grew more determined to get to him. With a complete lack of judgment, he tried to hit Kenwood.

“I’m trying to go easy on you because I see that you’re distraught,” Kenwood said as he wrestled John to the floor. “But you’re testing my patience to the breaking point.”

“No!” John wailed. “No! Don’t let him out. Don’t let him go. Damn it! Arrest him. Arrest him! What kind of sheriff are you?”

After struggling against Kenwood’s hold for another moment, John finally lay still as he silently sobbed. “Don’t let him go,” he whimpered.

“You shouldn’t have attacked me like that,” Kenwood said as he gently placed one cuff on his wrist.

“What! What the hell are you doing?” John said as he realized what was happening.

Kenwood helped him get to his feet then slipped on the other cuff, but was indulgent enough to cuff John in front instead of behind his back.

“We’ll go to the station and have a little chat,” Kenwood said gently.

“No!” John argued, renewing his struggles against Kenwood’s hold. “For crying out loud, you’re letting him get away with this. He’s going to get away with murder. Who knows what else he’s capable of.”

He turned to Sadie. “Watch out for this maniac! He’ll kill you, too.”

Sadie just pressed a sad grin.

Kenwood took a firm hold of John’s arm and guided him to the front door.

“Sorry for having to leave you again,” he called back to Sadie. “But at least you have someone to help you out with the investigation now.”

“Thanks, Kenwood,” Sadie said. She smiled at him, thankful not only for releasing Palmer, but thankful that he wasn’t the rough brute that she’d thought. He really was a kind and thoughtful guy. Fair and just.

He grinned, nodded and left.

“Oh, Palmer,” Sadie said, as she turned her attention to him. She gave him a warm hug and held him a moment. “I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re here.”

“You and me, both,” Palmer said. He held her tight then pulled back to look at her. “You know, that little jail cell in town is not very comfortable. Not one bit.”

Their eyes met and held.

Palmer, Sadie thought. Sweet, gentle Palmer.

The sudden and sharp bark of a dog broke them apart.

“What in the world...?” Sadie let out.

She turned to see Noodles and Kenwood’s new border collie run into the room. Immediately concerned, she stooped down to greet them.

“What are you guys doing here?” she said. “Did you
