Just as I pulled up out front of Laser’s house my phone went off. I looked at it and saw that it was a number I didn’t have saved into my phone.

“Detective West,” I said as I answered.

“It’s Damien. Cooper said you were out working the streets. Did you get a lead?”

“Sort of. I’m just about to go speak with a guy who removes the serial numbers off diamonds. I’m hoping he might know which shops use conflict diamonds. What about you? Any news on the girl?”

I was hoping we would be able to find her quickly like we did with Drew. The problem was, we only found Drew that fast because he had a pacemaker. He had something in him that could be hacked so we could get his location. If this girl didn’t have anything like that, or some type of smart watch or something, we wouldn’t be able to track her.

“Hopefully your guy can give you something. We have nothing over here. The crime scene was the same as yours. It was a mess; the laptop was destroyed. We have a uniform bringing it to Coop as we speak. Hopefully, he will be able to put it back together and maybe get some intel off of it. The officer’s security system was hacked, so no alarms went off. According to her father, she doesn’t have any medical conditions and her cell phone was left at the house. She doesn’t have a watch or anything that we could use to find her location. We’ve already searched the warehouse that Drew was left in.”

They were being smart. They probably had a whole list of warehouses that were abandoned that they could leave the kid in. And without her wearing anything with a microchip, Cooper couldn’t find her. What bothered me was the smashed laptop. Maybe they did it to make it seem like they were after something, but my gut was telling me otherwise. They smashed Drew’s laptop so we couldn’t get to his browser history and discover he had been playing video games on the DarkNet. So why smash hers?

“What do we know about this girl?” I asked.

“Jessica Montanna, fourteen, goes to Seaway High as a freshman. We’ve sent uniforms over to speak with her friends at the school. So far, though, nothing has come up. She’s a good student, according to the report cards that were up on the fridge. No Juvi record. Her mom is deceased as of three years ago. Officer Montanna has been raising her on his own ever since. He hasn’t even dated yet. Said he didn’t want to bring another woman into her life until she felt ready.”

“What were her grades in Math and English?”

“Seriously?” Damien asked, and I could tell he didn’t understand why that would be relevant. It might not be, but I was running on a hunch.

“Humor me.”

I could hear him walking before he spoke. “Math she gets all high nineties and in English she’s in the upper seventies, low eighties range.
