CHAPTER NINETEEN

ABBEY

When Abbey got home from her meeting with Magnus Magnusson, Sr., she was exhausted. Her whole body ached, as if she’d physically as well as verbally sparred with Magnusson all afternoon.

But the effort had been worth it. She had passed the “test.” After answering his questions for hours, she’d been hired by Magnusson to retrieve the cookbook for him.

In her apartment, Abbey flopped down on the bed. However tired she was, her brain wouldn’t switch off. The conversation with Magnusson looped in her head.

Finally, she jumped up, grabbed her phone, and called Fionna.

She explained what had happened to her actual client. “Listen,” she concluded. “I’m pretty sure Magnusson would need the cookbook itself to do any of the recipes. Same with anyone else who would want to use them. Anyone but you.”

Fionna remained silent.

“Do you understand what I’m saying?”

“Yes. Yes, it means only I can do magic with just the copies instead of the enchanted book.”

“Why do you sound so down about that? Doesn’t it mean you’re incredibly powerful?” More powerful than Magnusson—or whoever he had in the wings to do magic for him. Abbey was still too new to the world of witchcraft to know if men could be witches. Was Magnusson one?

“That’s not necessarily a good thing,” Fionna said quietly.

“Why not? You’re very special in a community of already special women. Which brings me to the next point. You hired me to find out what’s so important about the cookbook. We know that now. But you also wanted to know why Magnusson, in particular, wants it so badly. I don’t know about you, but the answer, that he can do magic with it, doesn’t seem enough for me. The way he’s been going about this…I think there’s some personal connection. I’m pretty certain he knows Mrs. MacDonald.”

Abbey wasn’t sure if she should say how Magnusson had reacted when she told him about Fionna, so she left that part out. “Could he be a witch himself and know the coven that way? Is there such a thing as a male witch?”

“I honestly have no idea. I’ve never heard of any other people like us. The Tarbet coven is the only one I know. But I recently met someone else with…let’s say supernatural abilities of a kind. Pari, a girl from Hunza, turned up at Penny’s, and Penny took her in. I would say that Pari and her grandmother are also witches. Not in the same sense as we women from Tarbet are, but they have their special gifts. In their case, the gift is passed from mother to daughter, too, just like in Tarbet. Male witches? I’ve never encountered one.”

“But maybe you have. What Magnus Junior can do with his hypnosis…don’t you think that’s a kind of supernatural ability, too? Magnusson Senior could have that power, and more.”

“You might be right.” Fionna sounded gloomy. “And even Magnus’s talent might be more dangerous than we knew. He implanted a false memory in Drew’s head. Drew thought he’d kissed me. That’s not what we agreed upon with Magnus.
