Peregrine follows Kent to the kitchen. He’s crying at the small island in the middle of the kitchen with his arms folded and his head down on them.

Peregrine takes the barstool next to him and puts her arm around his shoulder, “Kent, I’m sorry, I should never have said anything. Your Dad is a great man. He’s proven that over and over. This has all come about by a very, very bad man that hates your Dad. He caused your Mom to die.”

Peregrine doesn’t expect his response as he brings up his head, turns toward her and puts his head against her chest and throws his arms around her and continues sobbing. She pauses, seemingly uncomfortable, relents and wraps her arms around him.

“My Mommy is gone, ma’am. She can’t come back. She’s gone forever,” Kent squeezes tighter, he begins sobbing louder.

Peregrine squeezes back and feels a teardrop roll down her cheek. She leans her head forward and kisses the top of his head. She whispers, “It’ll be alright, little man. It’ll be okay.”

Kent needed that feminine touch, just like his mother would have provided. He has so many scenarios of things in the past and present running through his eight-year-old mind.

Dad’s one them.

Dad kills people.

One of Dad’s people killed Mom.

This is like a video game, only it’s my Dad.

This can’t be real.

I helped kill a one of Dad’s men.

I need Mom.

Peregrine, holds the boy as long as he wants to be held. Her dad told her once to not let go until the other person does, they may need the hug more than you.

After a few minutes, Kent releases Peregrine and sits back on his barstool. He notices that she’s not much taller than him. Mom was tall, well, tall for a woman. This woman, one that he literally just met, is very short. She has kind eyes and a gentle smile. But he also realizes that she’s one of “them.”

“Paige, are you like my Dad? Do you kill people too?” He asks with a tear stained face.

“Yes, Kent, I’m one of them. But not exactly like your Dad. Your Dad is a hero amongst our group. He’s the best of the best. I know it seems strange to think of it this way, but he really is. I know there’s a lot for your dad to tell you and I never should have brought it up the way I did, but your Dad is great at his job. That’s why there’s a man after you. He knows that your Dad will kill him if he catches him, so he picks on you. He’s no better than a playground bully. He’s already proven that. We just don’t want him to get to you before your Dad gets to him.”

“Oh, okay. That kind of makes sense,” the mind of an eight-year-old darts in many directions, “do you play video games?”

Peregrine smiles, “yes, I have been known to play a little.”

“Good, will you play with me?” Kent asks.

“Yes, I would love to play, but first, I’m hungry.
