As we begin down the hallway to the mess hall, there is a tension between the Major and Captain Anderson. The tension has become even more strained since Anderson received the call. It seems the soldiers are as bad as the troopers are when they are not able to complete a task as quickly as possible. Although Captain Anderson is not Regular Army like the Major. Anderson stopping to take the call has kindled anger in the Major. An anger that will undoubtedly boil over if it was to happen again.
If he had taken any longer, he may have been dragged the rest of the way. It was good for at least a minute to not be the main source of all the problems as the looks they have given me would seem to indicate.
As we enter into the mess hall, the others are sitting at our usual table. When they see me, they stand. I smile at them to show them I am all right and none the worse for wear. As I start to walk over to them, I am interrupted by the Major. “Smithton!”
“Yes, Major,” I answer, turning towards him.
“I will have everything uploaded on the computers and ready in five minutes,” the Major says as he turns with Captain Anderson right on his heels.
“I will brief the team and we will be ready in four minutes.” I turn quickly, hoping the Major does not take this as insubordinate, although it may have sounded that way.
As I get to the table, Marcie is the first to speak. “Still trying to make new friends, I see.”
Before I can answer Marcie’s question, Jack asks, “What’s going on, Walt?”
“Well, it seems they are going to give us all the information this time; at least that is what the General said.”
“So you talked to the General?” Steve asks.
The dejected tone is unmistakable in Steve’s voice. It is the one where he is disappointed with not being in the spotlight again and not what I wanted.
“Well, it wasn’t a pleasant conversation. He is not too happy with me right now,” I say, hoping it will keep Steve heading in the right direction.
Jack is looking at me and I know what he wants to ask, so I cut right to it.
“I asked the General about getting in touch with our families as soon as possible and I believe he will try to take care of it.”
Jack is watching me closely, trying to see if I am telling the truth and I can only hope I am hiding it from him.
“I am not sure what they will have for us as new information. I am just hoping it is all the information. I do know we are going to be at the station soon and we are not going to have a lot of time to process information once we get there,” I say, looking straight at Jack and then over to the other two.
“I do think whatever they have for us had better be good, for your sake and ours.
