“That was too easy,” Pete said.

We continued to chug through the rundown streets of Canderhall. The van, though still technically in one piece, was clearly on its last legs. Soon, we’d be walking. I doubted the Reich would give up so easily, and walking would be a quick way to shake off this mortal coil.

“Easy?” I asked. “You’ve got two dead and a vehicle about to start dropping parts like a leper.”

“Yes.” Pete nodded. “Like I said. Too easy. The Reich possesses enormous resources. Men as well as material. The response they sent against should have been such as to guarantee all of our deaths. After all, they can afford to lose soldiers more than we can.” He didn’t look at me, seeing as how he was driving and I was all the way in the back, and the rearview mirror had been attached to the windshield. “They let us escape. This was a show, meant to make us believe they wanted to stop us.”

“Why would they do that?”

“You tell us,” Mercedes growled. “Maybe they didn’t want to kill their precious Führer and his little bitch.”

“Oh, shut the fuck up.” I glared at her, keeping eye contact until she looked away. “There’s no way they could even know I was in this van, or where I was sitting inside it. They were just firing away.” I gestured at the bullet holes. The van looked like a giant rolling metal Swiss cheese. “They weren’t concerned about hitting me.”

“Still,” Pete said. “They let us get away. We’ll have to discuss this. Perhaps your, um, friend will be able to give us some insight.”

“She won’t give us shit if she’s dead,” I snarled.

“We’ll be at the safe house soon. There we’ll be able to give her emergency care and contact one of our doctors.”

“If she dies,” I said softly, “I’m holding all of you responsible.” I let my gaze fall on Mercedes. “Especially you.”

“No one’s dying,” Pete said. “Just calm down. We all want the same thing here.”

“Yes.” I settled down beside Lilith where I could keep an eye on Mercedes. “But that doesn’t mean we’re on the same side.”

One of the young men started to rise, eyes narrowed and nostrils flaring, but I stabbed him with a stare and he settled back down. Smart. I was in no mood for some macho douchebag to try and start something with me.

Pete cruised around for what felt like eternity, with no rhyme or reason I could determine, and the sun sank below the horizon, spreading purple and black shadows like bruises across the world. The brakes squealed as he pulled into the drive of a cinder block house on the outskirts of town.

“This is it.”

He cut the engine but no one moved. We sat in the dark, listening to the engine tick as it cooled, and waited for maybe five minutes before Pete finally nodded and opened his door. Well, he tried to open it. It must have been damaged in the getaway because it only moved an inch or so then came to a stop.
