Guy watched from the doorway, his face strained with concern as Elle sat slumped at the kitchen table, her eyes red and swollen, her gaze a million miles away. He had no doubt she was reliving the moment when they had found her sister on the driveway of Martin Fisher's house, her stomach sliced, the entrails spilling from the cavity like a nest of newborn snakes.

Guy swallowed the sense of remembered horror as he walked into the room and sat down by her side. 'Can I get you anything, Elle?' he asked in a quiet voice as if afraid to break into her torment.

She didn't move a muscle, her eyes remained glued to the tabletop, a solitary tear rolled down her cheek.

Guy reached out and closed his hand over hers. 'We need to think about contacting your mother, sweetheart.'

Elle blinked and turned slowly towards him. 'My mother?'

Guy sighed. 'She needs to hear it from you, Elle.'

Suddenly Elle thrust herself upright, the chair fell backwards as she leapt to her feet. 'I can't!'

Guy made a grab for her hand and she snatched it away and backed up. 'Please, Guy, I can't stand there and say those words to her.'

Guy held up his hands, he could feel his shirt clinging to his back with sweat. 'I understand, Elle, but if you don't tell her then someone else will.'

'But…'

'Think about it, once the papers find out about this then they'll go straight around to the house, they'll be camped on the doorstep pointing cameras at the house trying to find out what went on.'

Elle looked up at the ceiling as more tears slipped from her eyes. 'What was Kim doing there, why would someone want to do that to her?'

Guy rose from the chair and stepped towards her. 'Listen, Elle, we have to let the police do their job, there's nothing we can do about that side of things, but we still need to go to your mother's and tell her what happened.'

Elle looked at him, her bottom lip quivering, her eyes shimmering with more tears. 'Will you come with me?'

Guy nodded. 'Of course I will.'

Taking a deep breath, she sighed before looking around the kitchen as if she had no idea how she had got there. 'Should we go now?'

'We can't put it off; she has a right to know.'

Elle swallowed before nodding. 'You're right.'

'OK then, I'll get the car started and we can get going.'

'Fine,' she replied before wiping at her tear-stained cheek.

Guy gave her hand a squeeze as he walked past and grabbed the keys from the sideboard.

'Take as long as you like, Elle, I'll wait in the car.'

She didn't reply as he left the room, after half a minute she was still standing in the same spot staring off into space, trying to think of the words she would have to say to her mother, words that would crush her in an instant and no doubt burn any bridges left between them.
