“Miss Wally, you said that you’d take a look around the house to see what needs fixing. Do you know what you would be looking for? Do you know anything about fixing things? Like, can you do carpentry?” Aunt Trudy asked. Kalie smiled. She was about to tell Aunt Trudy that Wally was an architect when she heard Wally’s response.

“A little bit. I’ll take a look and see what needs to be done.”

“Good, you just let me know how much you think it’s going to cost, and if you don’t charge me too much, you’ve got yourself a job. I’d rather hire you than some of those good for nothings out there. I’m going to get some cookies for this little one here.” She took a very happy Annie into the kitchen. Dannie’s chest surged with love. She admired Wally’s good, simple nature. For a woman with so many talents and skills, she was humble and that made her exquisitely desirable in Dannie’s eyes. Wally noticed Dannie’s expression and smiled. The pride, the love, the longing and the desire reflected in Dannie’s face was worth rebuilding Aunt Trudy’s entire house.

The spell held even through Kalie’s sarcastic comments. “Well, well, Miss Wally. Aren’t you lucky? Looks like you might have gotten yourself a minimum wage job here in North Carolina. You are not serious about taking a look at the house, are you? It doesn’t take an expert to know what is wrong with this house! I can just tell you right away what’s wrong. It’s falling apart, that’s what’s wrong! This house don’t need fixing, it needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt. That’s what it needs!” Kalie was never one to hold back her opinion.

Dannie smiled and waited eagerly for Wally’s response. The response only a marvelous person like Wally would give. “Kalie, she’s old. She has no one to help her and, yes, the house is in pretty bad shape. There’s nothing wrong with me taking a look. Is there?”

“Yeah, but we know you, and we know you’ll end up with a hammer in your hands. And like I said, this is a major construction project. That’s why she can’t get anyone to come and work on it. You can’t put a nail on any plank on this house that won’t fall on first contact. Whatever needs to be done here can’t be done in an hour or two. And may I also remind you that we are in North Carolina and that you live in Virginia? About six to seven hours from here?”

Dannie chuckled, knowing that nothing would deter Wally from her task and wondering what would happen next. “I’m taking a look. Want to come with me? Aren’t you always saying that you need to take a vacation? Visiting another state could be thought of as a vacation, you know?”

Kalie rolled her eyes. “You are not thinking of coming back and spending time fixing this place are you?”

Wally said nothing and began to look around. Kalie continued talking.
