“I’m sorry, Blake, but I can’t come to your apartment,” I told him over the phone a few hours later. “Something important came up at work and I just can’t drop it.”

“Oh,” he let out, the disappointment in his voice and the frown I could just imagine on his face heartbreaking enough that I felt like just rushing over to him and placing my arms around him.

I knew I couldn’t do that, though. “I’m really sorry. I’ll make it up to you somehow. I have to go now. Bye.”

I ended the call and then allowed my hands to fall to my sides, sighing.

“You didn’t have to cancel your date for me,” Cassandra Hays said from the chair behind me.

I turned around to face her, shaking my head. “Yes, I did,” I told her. “Because I want to hear what you have to say. Besides, you risked your life to come here. To come to me.”

She tapped her fingers on the cup of coffee I had offered her. “Still, I know how you feel. I keep wanting to see Kevin, my boyfriend, and yet I can’t because it’s too dangerous to see him. It’s one of the reasons I want to end all this – so I could go on living my life and being with the people I care about it.”

I squeezed her hand gently as I sat across her. “I know. And I’m here to help you. I wouldn’t have left my number if I didn’t want to help you.”

She nodded, though I could tell she didn’t have much hope or faith in me. I didn’t blame her, knowing how tough her life must have been for the past weeks.

When I first saw Cassandra Hays in front of my apartment, I didn’t even recognize her, not only because her hair was curly and black instead of light brown, but because she looked thinner than in the pictures, clearly giving away the fact that she hadn’t been able to eat properly since her adoptive parents’ death.

As soon as she showed me the picture of the business card I had left with her former roommate on her phone, though, I realized who she was, and once I was able to get over my shock, I felt a huge sense of relief, along with a surge of excitement. Even now, although I felt bad about not showing up at Blake’s apartment, I could hardly contain the elation buzzing through my veins from having Cassandra right in front of me in my own apartment, knowing that she had the information I had been desperately looking for.

I let go of her hand and took my notepad and pen, deciding it was time for me to get that information.

“So, tell me what you know about your parents’ death.”

She set down the cup of coffee in her hands and clasped her fingers together. “All I know is that my Dad was working on something he didn’t want to, maybe something illegal and when he finally had enough and decided to stop working on it, he was killed.
