Chapter Eight

Andrey Novikov sat at his ornately designed desk in his study. He stared across the room at the family portrait of him, Svetlana, his deceased wife, and their only child, Vasili. The vodka swirled in his blood, making his eyesight blurry. He picked up the bottle and tipped it, sloshing the last of the clear liquor into his highball glass and shot it back, slamming the empty onto the wooden behemoth in front of him. He glanced up at the portrait again and cursed Svetlana for giving birth to the faggot a second before picking up the glass and hurling it across the room. It slammed into the face of his beautiful son, shattering, sending deadly shards flying across the room. Vasili continued to smile at him, ignorant of the embarrassment and devastation he had caused in Andrey’s life. He heard a loud pounding on the solid oak door to his home study and turned his head, staring at the door.

“Sir! What’s happening? Is everything alright, Minister?” his bodyguard shouted through the locked door.

“Go away, Igor! I am fine.” He listened for a few seconds at his guard’s retreat and returned his attention to the painting which dripped with the remainder of his vodka. So focused on the singular hatred of his only offspring, he was taken unawares as his killer stole into the room from an open french door. His head lolled on his shoulders as he tried to focus on the portrait and it took him several seconds before he became aware of the shadow that fell across his desk.

He looked up to the side drunkenly, straight into the golden eyes of the last man he would see in this life. Andrey took a moment to stare into the almond shaped beauty of them before he realized what was happening. The man wore a hood and a mask of black material stretched across his mouth and chin and as he stepped silently forward. The glint of a curved blade caught his attention. Terror lanced through him and he opened his mouth on a silent scream as the knife sliced through his neck from left to right. The last thing Andrey saw was his own blood spray out across his desk. He cursed silently as a red smile opened on his neck from ear to ear; his head fell backward and he registered the thunk on the back of his head as it hit the ornate chair where he sat. He stared at the ceiling as his vision blackened to a pinpoint and the last thoughts he had were of how much he hated his son.

Ichiro wiped the blood from his knife across the lapel of Minister Novikov’s dinner jacket, cocking his head to the side as he watched the blood pour from the portly man’s body. The man’s eyes glazed over as the light went out of them and with a great feeling of satisfaction, Ichiro stole away from the corpse. He moved silently to the french door where he’d gained access to the man’s heavily guarded study.
