Ski Shenanigans

The appearance of the Christian clan and Jimmy Rose as they walked through the Lihue airport was eye-catching to say the least. All the arriving and departing passengers noticed them. Apelehama, an imposing six-foot, four-inches tall with his dark skin and graceful stature, strode purposely through the airport with his partner, a slender redheaded and tanned beauty. Jacob, six-foot, two-inches of solid muscle held the hand of a honey-haired beauty with white skin. Jimmy Rose, a daunting six-foot, three-inches tall with slicked-back black hair, dark tan skin, and green eyes held the shoulders of a delicately-featured blonde girl with mesmerizing blue-green eyes, and the carriage of a princess. They looked like royalty traveling to a foreign country.

The family was going to fly first class to Reno, mainly because of the size of the men in the group. The attendant called them on the aircraft. Apelehama and Mandy sat in the first row. Jacob and Francine sat in the second row. Jimmy and Lilia sat in the third row. Jimmy felt very pleased that the Christian family had invited him on the ski trip to Mammoth Mountain. He had been saving his money, and hoped to get Lilia alone one evening for a nice dinner.

Francine whipped out her DVD player and then plugged in the double jack and both sets of noise-canceling earphones. She and Jacob were going to repeat their movie watching routine just like a year and a half ago when they had vacationed at Mammoth Mountain in the High Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.

The entire Christian clan and Jimmy Rose planned to stay at the same condominium, where Francine and Jacob had stayed. It was in a prime location right next to the mountain facing Canyon Lodge and the surrounding slopes. The condominium cost eight hundred and twenty dollars a night during the holiday ski season, but appeared beautifully appointed. They all planned to share in the cost, including Lilia, who had a substantial income of her own from performing. The sleeping arrangements would be a little tricky, though, with the size of the men, but they had decided the whole matter in advance to suit everyone.

Apelehama and Mandy would take the master bedroom with the king-sized bed. Jacob and Francine would take the back bedroom with the double sink and shove the two twin beds into one bed. Jimmy would take the small side bedroom with two twin beds. He could either leave the beds as is, or push them together to accommodate his six-foot, three-inch, sixteen-year-old frame. Lilia would claim the queen-size, foldout sofa in the living room.

The skill levels of the family varied when it came to skiing. Apelehama had skied as a youth. However, he had not been on skis for at least seven years since his first wife, Elizabeth, had become ill. Mandy skied elegantly and evenly, having skied in the western United States almost every year before moving to Hawaii. Jacob, a natural-born athlete, had skied Mammoth Mountain several times during his college days.
